So my husband and I really like Madison for our baby girls name but we keep hearing that's it's soooo popular & we don't want every other kid to have her name. We don't know any Madison's. Is it really that popular??? Thoughts?
Yes, it's popular. There are several girls at DD's school named Madison, all with different spellings. And honestly, I don't get the appeal. It's surname-y and masculine-sounding. There are so many lovely girl names out there and you have plenty of time to find one.

It's pretty trendy. But it's also a really pretty name. I think it's only an issue if having other kids with the same name would bother you. Keep in mind that Maddison & Madeline are both pretty popular now- leading to tons if kids nick named 'Maddie' if that's a nn you'd use.
I like Madison. I think it is cute for a little girl but sounds professional for an adult. We are going with a popular boy's name and I honestly don't care. My co-worker has given me a lot of crap about choosing such a popular name but her kids have weird names. I agree that popular is better than names that sound made up.
It's ok I guess but definitely sounds trendy to me, and I just don't think it ages very well. Like Freckles said, it's starting to sound dated. I would expect a Madison to be an 8-12 year old girl.
Extremely popular. EXTREMELY. Nameberry says it was the 9th most popular girl name in 2013.
It is a gorgeous name though. I couldn't use it because I hated having a popular name -- mine was #35 the year I was born (with #36 being the same name, slightly different spelling), and there were always 1-2 girls with my name in my class. Guarantee your daughter will be Madison X (<-- your last initial) in all her classes. If you're ok with that, go for it. It's truly beautiful.
I don't think Madison is as trendy as it was a few years ago. But who knows. I don't know any Madisons. And we haven't had any Gymboree classes with any.
But look up the popularity. And decide if that's important to you or not. But if you love the name, I wouldn't let anything sway your decision.
NMS, but if you love it, go for it. One thing to keep in mind is that even the most popular names aren't as common as the most popular names 10 or 20 years ago were, so although your daughter will definitely encounter other Madisons from time to time, I don't think her classroom is likely to be flooded with them.
We obviously love the name, it will be our daughter's name. We're staying with a "M" name like my mom and me, and this is our favorite. I don't know of any around us, young or older. I say go for it! but honestly it's all about your husband and your decision.
I like the name Madison, not a fan of Maddie though. I think it is pretty popular but that wouldn't bother me if I loved it. I myself have prob one of the top three most popular names of girls born in the 70s & 80s but have always liked my name. And I did it to my son, his name is Aiden but I love it!
I hear more Addison then Madison if it's popular 5yr ago that won't mean the same for today's babies. Just do what you like. If we have a another girl my husband likes Mia! I hear that name all the time and I'm not worried if it's popular or not. Good luck
Yeah, it's popular. My brother is an elementary school teacher and we asked about the most common names in his school and it was on his short list. I've always like Madelyn and Madison for the nickname Maddie, but it is very popular name.
I love Maddie/Madison but it sounds really bad with my last name, so yeah. If you don't want a trendy/popular name, google the top 10/100 lists for names. I don't care as much what's popular because it may be not be popular now but may be in a few years.
The name was a male name until the Darryl Hannah/tom hanks movie Splash where she plays a mermaid who chooses that name from Madison Avenue. True story bro;) I think it sounds 80's to me but to each their own
I would be worried about prematurely aging my kid with a name that has already reached its peak. I would expect a Madison to be in elementary school at this point. That means when your kid is 30, the name will be assumed to belong to a 40-year-old. I know several young Jennifer's who have this problem. Everyone expects them to be older than the mid-20s they are since Jennifer peaked 30-35 years ago.
I like it. It's popular, but it's a good popular name in my opinion. I have one of the most popular girls names from the early 80's, and while my best friend and my sister-in-law also share my name, I still like it and don't think it's a huge deal IMO. If you and your husband like it, go for it.
Madison is popular, and has been popular for many, many years now. I agree that it is verging on dated. The first girl I knew given the name Madison was born to family friends in the early 90s. It seemed fresh then, but has been thoroughly used ever since. More important to me would be the issue of meaning. As cute as some names might be, it only really makes sense to me to use a last name as a first name when it involves an homage or a bit of family heritage to give it meaning. Otherwise you have a girl with a random, masculine name completely unrelated to anything about her.
I have 3 friends with girls named some variation of Maddison. I'm a teacher and have on average 2-3 a year. Last year I had two Maddisons and an Addison all in the same class as well as another Maddison in another class. It's really cute though :-)
I teach high school and have had multiple Madison's the past 2-3 years. It may be a little more popular for older kids at this point. It's still getting used though. I have a friend with an 18 months old named Madison as well.
Re: The name Madison?
I mean am I the only one who's noticed all these baby name threads are asking about made up names?!
Keep in mind that Maddison & Madeline are both pretty popular now- leading to tons if kids nick named 'Maddie' if that's a nn you'd use.

Yeah, it's popular. My brother is an elementary school teacher and we asked about the most common names in his school and it was on his short list. I've always like Madelyn and Madison for the nickname Maddie, but it is very popular name.
