Trouble TTC

Temping/ovulation kits with PCOS

So, I'm on the bench this month as my RE has been out of town. DH & I are planning to try the old school way (what the hell, why not?!) this month. I'm hoping some of the meds have kicked started my bum system. Anyhow, my question is this-how accurate (or inaccurate) are ovulation kits with a diagnosis of PCOS? Has anyone used them with any success (meaning known ovulation)? I considered temping but understand that is more of a pattern deal, meaning it has to be done for a few months to be effective.
Thanks, ladies! I hope all who are reading this are happy & healthy wherever you are in your process ;)

Re: Temping/ovulation kits with PCOS

  • OPKs are not always accurate for us PCOS girls. My RE told me not to rely on them because they will give me false positives (and have in the past). I've never done any temping so I don't have much advice there.

As for the medicated cycles jump starting your system, I'd say it's totally possible! I normally don't ovulate on my own...but we did medicated TI cycles in May and June and then took a break in July and I ovulated on CD14 like a champ! We did medicated IUIs in August and September and started another break this month and these big ole sore boobies make me believe I've done it again! Good luck!! I'll keep my FX for a surprise BFP!!

  • Awww...thanks!! Your post makes me hopeful :) I'm wondering if I wasted my $ on an ovulation kit? I think the key is to just BD as much as possible in the two weeks following AF!
Best of luck to you this cycle too! Hopefully this will be your month!!

  • You can totally start temping even a week or less before o and have no problem seeing a temp shift. You just might not have the ability to predict o ahead of time. You might also have to wait a week or more to be sure it was really your shift. Good luck trying the old fashioned way!

  • Thanks, everyone! I think I'll try the temping even though I'm already on CD6. This stupid PCOS messes with your damn mind. I just wish one thing could be straight forward with this dang disease! I'm trying to look at this benched month as somewhat of a science experiment to see what the hell my body is going to do. Thanks, everyone for your advice!!
@BlueFairy5‌ -on a side note, I'm totally jealous you live in NYC. DH & I love it there & are headed that way right before Christmas (we try to go twice a year). I can't wait to sink my teeth into a Shake Shack burger!

  • I tried OPKs and I have PCOS. The first time I tried them I had 4 "positive" results in a month. I don't use them because they are expensive and not accurate for me. But if you already bought the kits and opened them, no time like the present to see how they work for you. :o) I just didn't buy any more after that because of the $ and the emotional toll it took because I would over-think the results.

Never did temping but I heard you have to buy a specific BBT thermometer.... am I right girls?

  • I just purchased a cheapie at CVS. I think it was $11.99. It works ok & gives you temp to the hundredths (if my elementary math serves me right!). It's a little slow but seems to be working out ok :)

  • I'm going to be using opk's too, after my next AF. I've never used on before...I'm not actually 100% sure if I'm ovulating at all though. Can you get a false negative? Or is the easiest way to tell just by temping?

Sorry for hijacking the post! blsav23!

  • Please-hijack away!! I'm not sure about false negatives. I'm sure it's entirely possible but I'm pretty sure that if there is an LH surge the test will pick it up & thus, it's probably likely that you will ovulate. My cycles have always been messed up, like 390 days long so I've never been a consistent ovulator, obviously. I've been temping & did my first OPK this AM (it was negative). I'm really interested to see if I end up getting a positive OPK this month as I'm not medicated at all.

Just wanted to give an update.  I'm not sure if this will be helpful to you or not because I'm just really confused.  So, I'm on cycle day 10 today.  Yesterday, I started my OPK & got a negative.  I tested again this AM & got a positive. I wasn't expecting to get a positive OPK result so early. It's the Clearblue Digital that is supposed to give 4 fertile days.  Today was the "flashing" smile meaning I should ovulate in the next 2 days.  Not to be an idiot but doesn't that seem kinda early for someone who goes literally hundreds of days between cycles?  I'm continuing to temp & will be interested to see what happens over the next 4 days or so.  So, I'm a little concerned I got a false positive w/my PCOS but I'm thinking we will go forward with BD anyhow.  Sorry of the rambling, it's all just so confusing!

  • Thank you @BlueFairy5‌ for the feedback! You explained it much better than the pamphlet with the monitor! I'm going to continue using the OPK & temping. I'm excited to see what my body does unmediated. I'm going to beat that PCOS bitch at her own game :)
