  • I'm sorry you are in pain, but what did your doctor tell you?  Did they tell you this was detrimental to the baby?  Or that you'd have to go on bed rest or anything?

  • I have kidney stones right now. They said they were not harmful to the baby, but just uncomfortable for me. I have to get an ultrasound today to see if I passed them. If not, I may have to have a stint inserted to pass them. No special diet right now just have to drink a lot of water. Hope you feel better soon!
  • I'm sorry that you're dealing with this beat wishes for a quick recovery.

  • I know there was a girl on the board who had a kidney stone during 1st tri.  Can't remember.  I'm so sorry you're going through this.  I've had several and so has both my parents.  As long as the dr is monitoring you for infection is what is really important. What has your dr said? Not sure if you are a FTM but my mother had 3 vaginal and 2 c-section deliveries.  She said that the kidney stones are actually more painful.  Not sure if that makes you feel better as I know the pain you are in. But if you can get through this childbirth is a breeze.....

BTW have they taken an U/S to see how big the stone or stones are.  That will also help determine the time it takes to pass.  Mine usually pass in about 2-3 days. Would suggest going to hospital if it gets bad though to make sure you are getting fluids.

  • I ended up in L&D at 23 weeks pregnant because of a kidney stone. I had never had one before so I didn't know what was going on. I has just in a bunch of pain and I didn't know why. They gave me fluids and pain meds. I passed it on my own in the hospital and they released me later that day. No special diet .

  • Yes I had a kidney stone 2 weeks ago. Back pain started on a Tuesday, I ended up in the ER Wednesday evening/Thursday morning where they discovered a bacterial infection in my urine and did kidney and bladder ultrasounds. I was given low dose hydrocodone for pain, keflex for the bacterial infection, and zofran in case the hydrocodone made me nauseous. I was sent home with a pee strainer and basically told "good luck". There wasn't much else they could do since I'm pregnant. I was told to immediately report back to ER if I got a fever or started vomiting since that could indicate kidney infection. I was in a decent amount of pain the next two days but eventually passed the stone Friday evening. The pain was the worst while it traveled into my bladder. I felt light pain in my back over the weekend and was extremely backed up from the pain meds, but I felt 100% normal again by the next Tuesday (after I had a few massive shits). Hah!

Same here. I thought you meant food restrictions, but I was not sure?
  • Sorry for the typo! I meant Did you have to be on early disability (if you're working) or you just took sick leave time off? I just had the ultrasound done this morning, waiting for final results. As for my OB Dr. Did say he was pretty sure it was kidney stones, basing it on the pain I am having and symptoms.

I took 2.5 sick days. You had kidney ultrasound this morning?

  • I've had kidney stones multiple times and have done everything from passing them on my own (during 1st tri), having to have a stent and even surgery. Drink LOTS! Lemonade and anything else acidic can help break the stones down. My stones were a different make-up from most (we had them tested after I passed/had them surgically removed to try to prevent others from forming). I am on a low-to-no oxalate diet. This limits chocolate, berries, black pepper, tomatoes, spinach, wild game, and a few other random foods. If you can collect your stone after you pass it, it may be helpful in the future.

My best advice for the pain is to drink, drink, and drink some more. I found stretching and warm baths to be helpful just to get through the worst parts. Good Luck! I know they are awful!

  • Oh, I forgot to add.... mine usually take 5 days to a week to pass. I've gotten lucky once with only 2 days, and then was on the other end of the spectrum and had to have them surgically removed after a week of trying to pass it on my own. Unfortunately it is just how big they are and how your body reacts to the process so I can't give you a better time frame of how long it will take.

  • I started having kidney pain three weeks ago this Saturday. My right kidney would hurt so bad when I'd go to the bathroom. The next day the pain would come and go. So that Monday my OB ordered a urinalysis and vaginal swab. Everything came back fine and the pain went away for a week. Last Monday the pain came back and she ordered an ultrasound of my kidneys. The right ureter was partially blocked and she suspected I had stones even though they didn't show up. My pain would come and go in waves. She gave me a Flomax and told me to drink a ton of water. That night I was in extreme pain for an hour or so. I think it was from the stones moving into my bladder. I passsed some small stones that night and the next day. I was in pain all day last Tuesday. I was fine Wednesday and Thursday and had mild pain Friday. My doctor said the ureter issue would likely come back and so could the stones because they tend to be a recurring thing during pregnancy. I was prescribed Hydrocodone and Percocet in case the pain comes back but It hasn't been bad enough that I've needed to take either of them. I'm sorry you're dealing with this and hope you pass the stones quickly. Like others have said, drink lots and lots of water.
