Do you send a thank you card for just a card?  

My in-laws send a birthday card for DS.  Not a gift but a card none the less.  I sent them a text pic of him "reading" it.  Sending a card for a card seems silly but it O13 says I should then I will, consensus?

No, because technically thanking someone for a card makes you look gift grabby because you are pointing out that they did not give a gift.
