Cloth Diapering

WWYD 5k

I am supposed to walk in a 5k this weekend to support my friend who recently beat breast cancer. I had planned to bring both boys and push them in the double stroller, but I just realized the walk starts at 8:00 am and the temp will be in the 50's. L still tends to eat every 2 hours, so I'm also concerned that I'll have to stop in the middle of everything to feed him. I'm still not good at nursing in the carrier, and I know we won't be dressed for easy carrier nursing. Should I try to pump enough to leave him with DH? Take him and bring a pumped bottle so I can feed him and keep walking? Feed him right before we walk and hope he holds out? And should I take the 2-year-old? He'd love it, but it's an extra kiddo to juggle. And we started PTing this week. :-/ I'm just a little stressed about figuring this out.

Re: WWYD 5k

  • I would do whatever would make the walk least stressful for you.  We do a walk like this every year and it's nice to be able to enjoy it and talk to people during it.  I'm bringing my 2yo in a carrier this year, but if I had another LO, I would not hesitate to leave one or both at home.
  • Personally, I find it easiest to bring the baby and leave the toddler.  How does L do in the stroller?  If I thought it would put the baby to sleep and stay asleep, I'd be fine taking them both in a double stroller.  But in all honestly, I'm terrified at having both kids by myself so I try not to do it (like on the go.  At home I'm okay.)  Also, if I only had one kid I would just wear her and not bother with the stroller.  But that's me.
I agree with Stoney though.  Do what is easiest for you.

  • Yep I'm in the "do whatever causes you less stress camp."  For me that would probably be bring the baby leave the toddler.  Feed baby right before the walk and then either use a carrier or a stroller during the walk.

  • So if I carry the baby, should I take a backpack with a couple of diapers and the bottle? Or is that allowed??

  • Yes, it's family-friendly. I think the runners generally start near the front and then there are a ton of walkers. I'm tempted to take the stroller and the carrier b/c I know he probably won't want to be in the stroller long and that would give me a place to put my coat if I get hot. Hmmm...decisions.

  • If it were me, I would take both.  But I am used to going out and about with all 3 of my girls.  I would probably push the bigger one in our umbrella stroller b/c it's easier to handle (esp. in crowds).  I would hook a bag of necessities on the handles.  And I would wear the smaller one.  My bigger one tolerates the stroller as long as it's moving.  And my smaller one actually wants to nurse less often when she is being worn (maybe not the norm).  Or I would leave them both at home.
  • Can you husband walk with you? I would put him on 2 year old duty and have him do 1/2 the work. Problem solved. If for some reason he can't, ask a friend for help or leave one of the kids with him.

As for breasfeeding, I'd try to do a good session just before and take a pumped bottle as a back up. If the baby gets fussy I don't think anyone will notice with all the commotion going on. I think this is one of those things that it seems way bigger of a deal than it really is. Just go, have a great time, and laugh with any hiccups that come with it. I think afterwards you will think "why was I so worried about this!?"
