Tea!

As it gets chillier a cup of tea sounds good- are there any teas to stay away from when pregnant or any that are especially good for pregnancy? I was gonna scope out Teavana's website but I'm sure you all will have some good info for me. Thanks!

  • Later in pregnancy raspberry leaf tea. Ginger for stomach ailments. But I stick to big mug of tetley in my fathers old mug. Comforts.
  • Watch out for some of the herbal stuff- I have tea that has echinacea in it, and it specifically says on the wrapper that pregnant women should not consume it.

  • My Dr. said no herbal teas, whatsoever.. stick with decaf black tea.

Check with your doctor to see what he/she says.
  • I had this same question. I'm a big herbal tea drinker year round and I've stopped since finding out I was pregnant due to some things I've read online. This is going to be one of my questions for the doc at my first appointment.

  • I'm an herbalist guys. I know all about this stuff! :) red raspberry leaf is fine at any point in pregnancy and is actually really good for you. Look in any herbal pregnancy book and you'll see that. Echinacea is also fine. Nettles, oatstraw, burdock......so many things are good. Doctors will tell you to stay away from herbs because they don't know about them, which I don't blame them for because there are lots of unsafe herbs and they don't want you making bad choices. I will add more later; I have some good recipes.

  • I miss my herbal teas!  I've been drinking decaf Earl Grey most evenings.  It's a decent substitute.  :)

  • There are so many teas that I can't have now.  :(  Be careful of hibiscus, calendula (marigold), safflower, cornflower.  For Teavana, take a close look at all of the ingredients in their teas.  I've heard cautions against chamomile and peppermint as well but to be honest, I can't find anything solid enough to convince me that those are a concern.

  • I have been doing a lot of research on this and have concluded that the only safe thing I could find is Roobios tea (though the flavor makes me sick right now) which is caffeine free and decaf black tea but you really have to watch out how much your are drinking. Even though it is decaf it still has caffeine which can add up if you drink a lot of it.

In addition to what was mentioned above I have also found no ginger tea (because I guess the concentration is higher than in food), no lemongrass, rose hips, hibiscus, licorice, chicory, sarsaparilla, etc. which rules out almost all decaf/caffeine free Tazo teas including passion tea, wild sweet orange tea, ginger tea, sweet cinnamon spice tea...

So I just really recommend doing a ton of research before you sip... Or just avoid it all together....
  • I've been told that ginger, peppermint, green and black are all fine as long as they are decaf. Thank goodness, because I have a chronic GI disorder and can't live without my peppermint tea! It's also been helpful for the nausea :)
  • I have no clue about teas (which is why I ask) but I know for sure that peppermint oil is a no go bc it brings on contractions. I've stopped using it on my students since reading that multiple places.
