Weaning and overnight travel

So baby will be 1 in a few weeks and my plan is to wean from the pump for daytime, but continue to nurse mornings, evenings and overnight if she wakes up. I have an overnight trip coming up a week after her first birthday. Would you bring a pump? I feel like I'm going to be uncomfortable if I go over 24 hours without nursing, but I am so over the pump at this point!

Re: Weaning and overnight travel

  • agree- you will be uncomfortable. pump and dump it if you want, but you don't want to get blocked ducts or mastitis. do you have a hand pump you could bring? or are you comfortable hand-expressing?

when i stopped pumping at work when DS was 14 months, i was very full by the end of the workday and happy to have DS nurse. it would not have been pleasant to go 24 hours.

  • Yes. I got mastitis when I went on an overnight interview when DS1 was 1.5 and only nursed 2 times a day. I thought I would be fine to just hand-express in the shower in the morning but obviously it wasn't enough and I was making a 4 hour drive back with fever and extreme pain.

  • I brought my pump when I was in that situation and pumped in the am and before bed. It's a pain, but not as bad as pumping throughout the day!
