Anemic Cat Bit Me

Okay, now don't freak out. I don't have cat scratch fever or any signs on infection. I'm just wondering if anyone knows or has experience with FIA (Feline Infectious Anemia). Also called feline hemotropic mycoplasmosis or infection by Hemobartonella felis, or infection by Mycoplasma haemofelis or by Mycoplasma haemominutum. One of our kitties turned a little yellow (jaundice) and we didn't catch it as she is a more reclusive kitty, she just wants to sit and lean on you while you watch tv. She's getting her meds and looks to be improving. I tried asking the Vet and my internist if I needed to worry and neither could really tell me. I technically don't have an OB yet as I have not been cleared by the RE to go get one, I have the OB/GYN I normally see but we haven't discussed me being pregnant and I haven't wanted to call to figure out who they are going to pass me onto since my OB left the practice last April. *sigh* I know I'm complicated. Does anyone know if I should be worried about this affecting the LO? The bite happened Saturday night and besides making me cry, cause I want all my cats to love me dammit, nothing is wrong. The bite is healing nicely. I don't feel any different than the blargh I was already feeling.

Re: Anemic Cat Bit Me

  • I'd actually call a veterinarian - they're likely to know more about the possible effects of this condition on a human as they're more familiar with animal illnesses.

I'm sorry you're scared!  I am sure everything will be okay, but I know how easy it is to overthink everything.

  • OMG! I can so so relate to this post. My cat has some kind of undiagnosed respiratory thing (we were told when he was a kitten it wasn't FIV but it was something they couldn't cure so to just watch it and here we are years later.) My cat was sitting on me two weeks ago and bit me! Holy crap I went into panic. I called the dr on call and he said it was probably fine but if it got red I'd need an antibiotic. I've put it out of my mind until now. But hmmm... You've got me wondering if we need to get our cat in. Granted I was bitten two weeks ago so fat load of good that'll do now... Pregnancy sucks. I am so thankful for it but it's scary scary shit.

Okay, I was telling everyone else to not freak out. That appears to not have worked so well... I'm calm just curious. I've had cats since I was 16 and I'm allergic to them as well, not that we knew that til I was 20 but... whatever. Not giving up on  the lovey fur balls, ever! I have to take the allergy meds anyways so, many kitties it is.

    The Vet had no idea.

Just wondering if the kid is going to meow now unless I take some kind of broad spectrum antibiotics.

  • Can u call up ur RE? Maybe they might have an idea? Or the on-call number from the OB after hours so you don't have to worry about asking for a certain doc?

  • I would check with a doctor - your RE, or do you have a GP?  I was bitten by one of my cats a few years ago, and my hand started swelling.  I needed an update on my tetanus shot, and I got it at that time.  Is your tetanus up to date?  (It's good for 10 years).

These are the kinds of things that a doctor might think of - I would at least call your doctor's office for a suggestion.

  • Yep, called my doctor and their response was, "Dunno, call your OB." Thank you, so helpful.

Tetanus is up to date because my house bit me awhile back. Weird story.

The bite is clean and healing no problem, no redness, nothing really of note. Sounds like you got the start of the cat scratch fever.

Next is the long call to the OB and the well, who's your doctor bs I was trying to avoid. *le sigh*

Why can nothing be cut and dry? Oh, yeah, this is reality and not the tv kind.
