My sweet puppy

Our dog is almost 7 months old and the most loving playful little guy. He is a full blooded basset hound and will be 60lbs, he is almost 40 now. The thing is when he plays he has a horrible habit of stepping on me. I'm trying to teach him not to jump or stand on my belly. But, he gets all sad. This is really my fault because I have let him get away with this behavior for so long. Any tips on prepping a spoiled and well loved canine for a sibling or training tips for him being around me.

Re: My sweet puppy

  • mine had a horrible habit when we would play. he would jump up and push off against me. What worked for me is when you see him about to step on you put your hand up like youre saying stop. in front of his face....so he would have to run into your palm to move any further. say "gentle" or "easy" and show him where he can go. then tell him good boy when he avoids your tummy area. Also what helped was when he got close i would hold my stomach like i was protecting it and tell Loki "easy" and "be gentle" it made him pause long enough for me to correct him.

  • The big dumb guy in my siggy was about nine months old when I got pregnant with my first kiddo.  He's about 75 lbs, and he was (and to some extent still is) a jumper and a climber-of-people.  I actually took him to beginning and intermediate training classes while I was pregnant, and it helped a lot.  I don't know if you have the time or desire to do it, but it helped a lot for us to get him in line before the baby came.

  • Similar issue with my 9 month old 55 lb golden. She is very jumpy energetic and crazy. I'm more scared of her accidentally hurting baby once it's here. I'm hoping she'll calm down in the next 8 months :/
