What to do for a lingering cough

LO had a cold a month ago which mostly healed. He still has a slight runny nose. The thing that's bugging us is this lingering cough he gets at night. Some nights he can't get a handle on it and wakes himself all the way up hacking away. We take him into the bathroom and run the shower for steam. Then we try to put him back to bed. Some times we sleep with him on our chests as we sit up so the fluid doesn't come up. Any tips for what else we can try? He just turned 1 last month and we don't want to use cough syrup until he's older.  He had his 1 year appointment 2 weeks ago and his chest sounded fine. TIA

My husband took LO for the appointment. He said he did mention the cough to our doctor but the doctor said his chest sounds okay so he should be fine.  If LO can't get any sleep we'll take him back.  I just wanted to know if any other moms had some tips up their sleeves.

To stop nighttime coughing in a child put Vicks Vaporub generously on the bottom of the feet at bedtime, then cover with socks. Raw honey as cough syrup if he's over 1 is brilliant too.

We use a humidifier in DD's room anytime she has a bad cough.  There are also Vicks plug ins you can get that have worked well for us.
