Success after IF

FET success with only one frozen embryo?

I have one perfect looking 6 day blast 'on ice' and am considering using it within the next 6 months to a year.  However,  I feel like my chances may be slim since it's only one... and of course am worried about the success of even the defrosting process.  I am not sure what they used to freeze, if it's vitrification (??) or not, which i know increases chances.  Also, do you go through everything to prepare and then the day of find out if it's a no-go if defrosting failed??

i have two sons, one which came after two IVF attempts.  I just feel like I can't let that embryo go, but am worried about starting up all the emotional chaos again going through this.  So, anyone have good news with a similar scenario?

Re: FET success with only one frozen embryo?

  • My lone 6 day frostie is now an adorable 11 month old. If the embryo quality was good enough to freeze, I think your chances are pretty good.

  • We transferred two, but they were both day 6 embies frozen by vitrification and the quality of both improved after thawing.

The hard part is that yes, you wouldn't find out until the morning of ET if the embryo survived.

  • I did a FET in August using our one embryo that had been frozen for over six years. The grade when it was frozen was not great but once thawed it expanded quite nicely and I am pregnant now. My RE did say that I was lucky in that they had just switched to the quick. "flash" freezing right before my IVF cycle. They have had much better success rates vs the slow freezing. I had the same feelings of not being able to not give our embryo a chance but also be worried about how I'd feel if it didn't work. I tried to go into the cycle assuming it wouldn't work and focusing on how our lives were pretty happy right now and although a new addition would be very welcome, it wouldn't be the end of the world if it didn't happen. Since it worked though, I can't really say how I would have felt if it hadn't. I'm guessing devastated but at least I could look back and say I did everything I could.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

    This Cluttered Life

  • I've done 2 FET's. On the first one, all 3 embryos survived thaw and were transferred. I had a twin (2 sacs) miscarriage @ 5.5 weeks.

The second FET was just one embryo. It did survive thaw, got pregnant and then miscarried at 6.5 weeks. I think overall, they have a 30% success rate!

    Good luck!
