Baby gap sizing ??? STMs

hello ladies

I'm a bit confused with the baby gap sizing and just want to get an idea if runs true to size.

they have NB clothing that says it fits up to 7lbs is there any give in that ?

then they have 0 -3 months that fits 7 - 12lbs?

I've just bought some 0 - 3months items - 2 footed onesies, 1 pair of pants , 2 hats and 2 pairs of socks. Wondering if I should buy in size NB/up to 7lbs or not ...

thank you :)

Re: Baby gap sizing ??? STMs

  • I don't have experience with baby gap nb clothing but iirc baby gap generally runs small like old navy, so I'd probably skip the nb until you know what size your LO is.

  • I wouldn't buy too much in the way of NB clothes if I was you, although most NB clothes will fit up to 8 pounds, it depends on the baby. Even if 7 pounds or less, if you've got a long and lean baby, they might not fit. Consider getting mostly adjustable size onsies and sleep gowns. You can layer these along with socks and hats to make sure baby is warm until the 0-3 month clothes fit better.

Also, I recommend getting sleepers that zip instead of snap. Carters has some great inexpensive ones. You will come to hate snaps after about 3 days if you are mostly putting baby in sleepers.

Runs large. Always has for DD anyway and she's huge.

Whoa I think both gap and ON run large. All the other brands like Circo and children's place are smaller.

  • I freaking LOVE BABY GAP.

We found that for our long and lean girl, everything fit her perfectly.   Shirts are usually longer and so are pants.  Pants also tend to be skinny.  90% of her wardrobe is Gap.  (My good friend works there and gives us all of her daughter's hand-me-downs).

You kind of find what fits your kid best and run with it.

  • Re: NB - most babies don't wear newborn clothes.  Grace was in them for months though because she was 5 pounds.   We went out and bought more clothes after she arrived because we didn't have enough NB.

Noah will be in preemie but we aren't buying too many because it's better to have clothes that are too big than too small.

In regards to sleepers, some people love zip, some love buttons.  I personally loved buttons because they looked cuter than zip when she was itty bitty but then switched to zip when she was squiggly.    It's a personal preference and you just won't know until she gets here.

Buttons are nice because you can do just the bottom half of the sleeper for diaper changes, whereas with zip, you open them all the way up.

Haha I find the opposite- ON runs small and CP large. I guess it depends on the kid.

  • I'm surprised to see that people think Gap runs small.  I've always known them to run large.  And I bought some NB stuff, which is huge.

  • thanks for all the replies, yeah I do prefer the zipper ones too ! I live in London we don't have Carter's here but they ship to the UK and the shipping is actually quite cheap.

Me too.  Gap seems to run large and Carter's seems to run small IMO.

Also, DS was 8lbs at birth, lost almost a pound (so around 7 lbs) and was able to wear NB for awhile.  Especially in things that were adjustable (like the Gap onesies) or didn't have have feet in them (like pants and gowns).  Plus most of the stuff stretches.  I wouldn't go nuts and would probably buy mostly 0-3 months, but buying some NB isn't a bad idea.

  • I feel like a lot of the Baby Gap runs bigger than the sizes posted on the clothes.  My DS wasn't able to wear the 0-3 month stuff until he was around 2 months old.  Granted he was 6 lbs when he was born but by the time he was a month old he was over 9.

  • Don't buy too much newborn bc they grow out of it pretty quick, it all depends on the size of your baby though. My son was 6lbs 14 oz so he stayed in NB for a little. But average baby size is about 7lb 6 oz. it's hard to say and a lot of clothes run so different, you have to eye some stuff or try it out when baby comes

I saw the zip vs. snaps, I know on another thread mom's recommended the snaps the first few days until the umbilical cord falls off and that zippers may sometimes catch. I know Target has the new born tshirts and long sleeve shirts right now and I bought a few to use those first days.

  • For us, Baby Gap runs large. Both my boys were born at 8lb 8oz and they both wore newborn for several weeks.

  • I agree with others that say Baby Gap runs large.
  • I also agree that Baby Gap runs large. Its been my experience that onesies and one piece outfits from Baby Gap are short and wide. Whereas Carter's are long and lean and at least fit DS much better. Now that he's older Gap clothes fit fine and I'm hoping to put this little girl in some of their cute dresses!
