recommend your knives

I really need new knives. I'm looking specifficly for knives that won't rust, are really sharp and comes with sleeves to store away in the drawer.

I need something to cut veggies, fruits, meat ect.

I really only need like 3 or so good knives.

Recommend the knives you love, the brand, and what style the knife is.

DH has done some research on knives, he recommended this link:

    This is all from DH:

He says that Cutco knives are way overpriced for their quality.  They use inferior steel, they're stamped and not forged, and if the handles get too hot, they melt.

Most places will recommend a Victorinox fibrox chef knife as a good economy starter knife; you can get great quality (better steel, better handle than cutco) for only 30 dollars or so; most chefs/kitchens start out with these. If you want to move straight to the expensive stuff then the mac and global brands are pretty good, as are the shun, wusthoff, and others.

ETA: I forgot that you wanted recommendations on what knives to get - A chef knife, a paring knife, and a fillet knife.

  • Another vote for Cutco even though they are expensive. I am a kitchen gear whore and I wouldn't change a thing about them and I use 3 of them everyday. (I have a block of about 8 pieces).

  • I have wustoff knives that I LOVE! My dad gave me one per holiday (birthday and Xmas) starting after college, until I had a good set going.
If you are looking for something less extravagant, my MIL recently bought a block of kitchen aide knives. I used them when I was there and thought they were really nice.

  • We use Henckels over here. My FIL was beyond excited to get them for us. It was our first engagement gift and we didn't even have time to choose another option before the William Sonoma box was at our door. I sharpen them before each use and love them.

  • I'm a Santoku whore. It's my go to knife and I rarely use any other.

If I had to recommend two more, I'd say bread and utility.

I currently have a block of cuisinart knives that I got on bLack Friday for $50. I've had then for 5ish years and have sharpened them once. They are due again but all in all I am very happy with them.

I'd recommend trying out some knives at Williams Sonoma or some other store that let's you really hold them. Depending on the size of your hand you might love/hate any of our recommendations. I used to hear great things about Henckels and wanted a set until I held them. They are made for a much larger hand than mine.

  • Thanks everyone!
I agree, @ConnieRob I need to hold them. My husband bought me knives a few years ago for Christmas, and when they were delivered I held one and instantly knew I wouldn't line them, so. ....I returned them. I haven't bought any because I'm rather picky and I don't want to settle. I want to invest in good quality knives that I'll love.

We've got a William Sonoma near me so I'll head there and test them out!
