What the heck is a "coolie"?

I was in the grocery store and this mom was sternly telling her daughter (in the grocery part of the cart) to sit on her "coolie". Last I knew, "coolie" was a fairly offensive racial slur, obviously not what this mom meant. So, what was this mom referring to? Her daughter's bum or maybe vagina? Because if you meant bum, why wouldn't you say bum, buttn tush, etc.?

The mother had to repeat herself several times so I know I heard her correctly.

Butt in Italian is culo. But it's not like us saying butt, it's more profane. Worse than even saying ass. So I'm surprised that it's turned into cutsie baby talk. Regardless, does sound cute for an English word.

Wow, I was perplexed when I read this, but then of course my Italian-American husband knew what it meant right off the bat!

In Spanish butt is culo, but you could also say "culito," which means small butt or is used for endearment, so perhaps it was short for culito?

We are Italian and use coolie as butt.

haha this brought up some good childhood memories. i'm also 1/2 italian and it was reference to the butt but a cutesie term.
