Perhaps more of an UO, but I hate puppy stores. We are at potbelly today and the windows looked right into the puppy store next door and I teared up several times looking in there. I hate that they are all alone in those cages, standing on wire for weeks, smelling their own urine and poop. I guess it's better than the puppy mills they all came from, but that's another issue all together. All this to say that I hate you if you've ever bought a puppy from one of those stores.
(I also teared up the other day talking about the circus with DH and the poor animals...I have issues)
Agreed. When it comes to pets, adopt don't shop </p>
I'm even okay if you do a breeder because you have your heart set on something particular (but I think adoption is the kinder choice). It's those fucking puppy stores. Idk how anyone can go in there and not be ashamed and disgusted.

I couldn't handle the pet shops in A few of the districts in Tokyo when I lived in Japan. It was awful, and I cried the first and only time I went into one.

I also feel my boobs throughout the day to check how full they are, and I still drop food on LO since he insists on being held so often. But, my biggest confession is, I reuse my disposable nursing pads. I don't throw them away until they're full, even after I've already showered. Probably why I always smell like warm, old milk
I totally lurk TTGP always and I'm so excited because @beckynsean11 got her BFP this week. Congratulations @beckynsean11
@mambonumber5 Thank you! I miss you Sept ladies so bad! Congrats on your lo!
ETA: I just realized this was on Sept '14, baby brain is kicking in already! HAI FRANS!!!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS!!! Love this!
After telling everyone how I was totally going to be able to handle everything, I have to withdrawal from all of my classes. I'm too behind, and I stress daily about catching up and staying that way. It makes me crazy and pissy which is projecting on to the baby, and it's not fair to either of us nor to the instructors who have been so accommodating to me. I feel like a failure, and I'm actually scared to email my advisor about it.

My quote thing isn't working so @jenner37 I am so in the high waisted jeans club. As long as you're not in elastic waistbands, I'm not considering them "mom jeans"
My LO is almost 3 weeks old and I think I'm ready to give her to my mom for a weekend away at grandma's already. Between my second hospital stay and all of my health problems, I feel like maybe I need a couple of nights away, but my mommy brain is telling me that I'll be a bad person if I let her go this early.
My toddler pooped in the bathtub, right after she got in. Joys of motherhood.
I didn't even get her washed yet on the bright side all I had to do was drain the water and wash the tub instead of having to do all that then rewash her. For the record she's only ever peed on me one time, never pooped, and this is the first time she's pooped in the tub. It scared her so it probably won't happen again.
I went to dinner tonight with friends and had a beer. Everything I hear says one beer is fine to still nurse, but I got paranoid so I pumped and dumped anyway. 5 oz, literally down the drain...
I'm all about if you're ok to drive you're ok to pump/nurse but if you do this again and you're paranoid you can always split that milk up to dilute it with other milk that you have previously pumped. Dumping is no good.

I 100% agree. Pet store puppies and back yard breeders that breed their pets just because....suck. Good breeders and adoption.... awesome.
I got both my pure breed dogs from my local shelter. Lots of pure breeds ending up in shelters these days.
And I know it is totally Saturday but my sleep deprived brain doesn't have a clue what day/time it is so my confession is I almost always prefer waffles to tacos. Can I still be an S14'er?
@crystalangel79 ugh my uncle has a kennel and its awful! Just AWFUL!! My other uncle was having to house some of his dogs there temporarily, however he moved them because he thought it was such a terrible, nasty mess. blah.
We got Mr. Bubbles from a breeder. British Shorthairs aren't common in the US and it's very very rare that you'll find one in a shelter. DH wanted one b/c of the breed's temperament. He is tge sweetest, gentlest cat I've ever met. However, Miss Kitty is a shelter cat..so was the calico that I had growing up. I'm a huge proponent of adoption...but I can't imagine not having Mr. Bubbles :-)

I don't think there's anything wrong with good, responsible breeders.. ie people that breed for the betterment of the breed, don't breed just for the money, and don't breed their pet just because it has papers or because they just want one litter.
"Back yard" breeders drive me completely crazy. My Nikolai is a pure breed Siberian Husky that was a shelter dog. He was given up when he "got too big", ugh. I
get people asking me to stud him out because he's so beautiful... but
sorry, he's fixed. A dog being a pure breed does not automatically qualify you as a breeder. But the reason it drives me crazy is because most people that do it are in it for the money and the animals end up being overbred, under cared for, or bred poorly.
My German Shepherd is an example of that last one. He was a back yard bred dog abandoned at 6 weeks old. I adopted him when he was 8 weeks... he has soft ears (not desirable in the breed, but otherwise no big deal, I find them cute) and hip dysplasia.... a very big deal, and something that a responsible breeder would never breed. Dutch was in a lot of pain before he even hit a year old. I've worked with my vet to manage his pain and he's a very happy dog that I love to pieces, but the people that bred him to try to make a buck piss me off.
Hip Dysplasia can't even be screened for (as in guaranteeing a dog doesn't have it) until the dog is 2years old and I once met a couple that bred their 1 year old huskies and were charging $900 based on them "having papers". They didn't even know what I was talking about when I asked if the parents were hip certified, ugh! A GOOD breeder I know that shows her huskies and has medical documentation that they are both dysplasia free and cataract free charges $1000 for her puppies.
/rant about bad breeders.
Good breeders are not evil. If someone does the proper research on the breed they want and finds a reputable breeder more power to them. That said, there are a LOT of great dogs in shelters... pure, pure-ish, and mutt alike! I always encourage people to look at shelters first, even if they want a specific breed.
Here are my two boys plus a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix that I fostered a couple years ago. I plan to foster again when my kids are older.
ETA: I didn't even touch on puppy mills. That is a whole new rant that I'm sure most people are already on board with.
Another pet peeve (sorry, I'm on a roll) is when someone gets a dog that is mostly of one breed and then complains about a common characteristic of that breed. Do some research before adopting. For example, so many people love beagles because they are so darn cute but most of them are sort of high need and can bark a lot. They can be great pets but maybe not for someone who is gone a lot as they are sort of needy. Not hard to find that info out... or adopting a high maintenance dog and then complaining because he/she needs to be groomed a lot... or adopting a dog who requires lots of exercise but never taking them for exercise and then complaining about bad behaviors. It's important to pick a breed that matches your lifestyle and find a dog to adopt who is primarily that breed. I love going to the dog park (so does my pup, lol) and find it to be an enjoyable, social time to get out... but if someone doesn't or doesn't want to walk their dog or whatever, then get a dog who needs less exercise.
Just saddens me to see so many people get pets and how many pets end up back at the shelter due to the owner's lack of initial research... especially the big ones (and I have a heart for big loves).
I totally agree!! People not researching the breed they get drives me crazy too because the dog is the one that suffers for it. I spend a lot of time telling people how much work my beautiful "must have been an adorable puppy" husky is. And your beagle example is something I've seen happen. I work in a pet store and someone in town must have bred their Beagle because two adorable puppies the same age came in on the same day. To both pet parents I said the same thing, "Adorable beagle puppy! Gonna be a handful!". One pet parent responded, "Yeah, I know!" and we went on to talk beagle and puppy talk. The other pet parent looked confused and asked, "What do you mean?" Argh!
I'm not into designer clothes or purses either and I totally understand making the comparison, but if no one responsibly bred specific breeds we'd be left with the irresponsibly and poorly bred dogs from backyard breeders and the "oops" litters only. Over time we wouldn't have specific (or almost specific) dog breeds anymore and then a person wouldn't be able to research what type of dog they want based on a breed's typical size, temperament, and needs.
I totally understand your opinion though, shelter animals that could otherwise be adopted is sad beyond belief. That's why I'm so passionate about telling people about what kind of dogs they could find in shelters (so many people looking for a specific breed don't even consider a shelter).
We have a purebred dog with papers that we bought from a breeder.
BUT we do because we are both allergic to most dogs, so we are very limited in breeds we can have. I also have a weird allergy to dog saliva and will break out in a rash when certain dogs lick me. We decided we wanted a miniture schnauzer and found a very good breeder to buy her from. We went and visited her in her home before we decided to purchase. I had to let all the dogs lick me before we could choose one that I could have. Due to all those issues, adoption from a shelter is not something that we could really do.
My sister bought a very expensive Boston Terror (terrier) from a pet store. I was so mad that she did it but in the end knew that poor dog needed a home. That's my crutch in the whole breeder/pet store buying is those poor animals need/deserve homes too. It just angers me that they are put in that situation because of people wanting the pure breds/designer breeds. My sisters dog has so many health issues cause she's a puppy mill dog which the pet store owner swore she wasn't. But after the third health problem we had to do research and found out she came from one.
My Australian Cattle dog is from a "breeder" but from a family farm in my community that only breeds every so often and doesn't advertise their puppies. It was just word of mouth how I found her. And they actually didn't want any money but she had shots and paperwork because both parents were from bloodlines so I forced them to take $200.
My corgi was from a friends dog who had puppies from an unexpected pregnancy ... She was a foster fail and adopted her corgi that got knocked up when she brought her to another friends house ... So he was a free dog from an oops liter.
Before I got my cattle dog, I online shopped a shelters and filled out so many applications for dogs and every one was either pending adoption or adopted that day and they were behind on their posts which is completely understandable. I cannot trust myself going to a shelter ... I would take everyone home. No joke. If we had a bigger house and more land, I would totally have a small hobby farm with all kinds of animals. And my husband knows it and that is why he refuses to let me move.
And it didn't help before LO we had fertility issues and I got my motherly-ness fullfilled by have two dogs, a cat, fish and two guinea pigs. I so want a goat or two. And horses and cows ... Serious I want a hobby farm so I can take care of animals 24/7!
Oops sorry for the ramble ... LO is passed out (first time all week no witching hour as of yet this evening) and I'm wired in preparation for him being up til 2!
Pet store dogs don't need to be rescued by you. Someone else will buy it and as a last resort they may give it away to a friend, employee or shelter. All you can do is not add to the demand for puppy mill dogs by not buying one.
Can we just turn this into an AW pet thread? I know we've done it before, but I love seeing the pups! We rescued this big head 12/31 of last year. He had spent the previous 6 months in a crate 24/7 because his previous owner's mother didn't like pits, and the family had moved in with her after they had to leave their house.

Nikolai looks so serious in that photo, but he's just as much of a goof as Dutch is. Proof...
And because I want to be a total AW over my dogs...
