Fever after shots?

DS got his 4 month shots last night. He woke up once with a 103/104* temp and fussy. He ate, got tylenol, and slept again. Next wake up temp was down and he wasn't fussy. When he went to daycare and came home today he had a temp about 100/101* again. He was fussy for daycare they said, but he was smiley for me, just a little more tired than normal.

I'm just worried because the daycare director said kids don't normally get such high fevers from shots. Dr. said to keep an eye on him and if he's fussy or not eating or wetting to call but that usually days one and two can be bad after shots.

Anyone's LO have a fever after shots? How high? How long did it last?

He also has a stuffy nose so of course I'm worried about the crazy virus thing. But I mentioned it to the dr at the checkup yesterday and he didn't seem concerned.

Re: Fever after shots?

  • Our little one did fine with his 2 mo shots- no issues. In Monday he had his 4 mo shots and that night spiked a. 102 fever. I called the pediatrician and they told me that the Tdap vaccine can cause fevers. We have him Tylenol but he was really restless all night. The next morning he was at 100. The fever went away that afternoon. Scary to go through !!!!

  • The CDC info sheet says fevers up to 105 are a potential side effect. Our pedi says the higher ones aren't as common but they're also not harmful.

In general some kids just have a tendency to get higher fevers. My son is one of them. If he gets a fever for any reason, it's going to be higher than typical. We see at least one 103 or 104 reading every time he gets sick. Pedi says it's common, especially in kids under age 5.

@Craved1 hopefully shots are uneventful for you! And honestly, my now three year old has never had an issue with her shots, and even DS' S two month shots went fine. So hopefully this is a rare fluke.

  • How's LO doing @ns1‌ , better? DD1 had fevers around 103/104 after several of her shots. Usually lasted 1-2days.

It's been up and down but he hasn't been fussy for me and is eating well. This evening he got to 101/102* again, but now as I nurse he feels back to normal. I hope he's getting through it! Thanks for asking @lica001‌ .
