Trouble TTC

N3TR - Mattress Recommendations?

DH and I DESPERATELY need a new mattress.  We're still sleeping on the cheap spring one I bought when I graduated college (which will be 10 years ago in May).  We'd prefer not to spend thousands on a new one, but I am willing ot pay for quality.  I'm leaning towards a cool gel memory foam one because I've heard good things about them.  I've seen some that seem pretty well discounted on overstock.com but they aren't brands I'm familiar with.  Consumer Reports actually recommends a brand I haven't heard of that seems to only be sold at Costco.

We're both pretty active people and do get sore backs/necks pretty regularly, but it's hard to know if that's activity related or bad mattress related.  DH is also a really light sleeper who usually gets up 2-3 times a night at least.

I figure personal recommendations are always the best, though.  So, do you wonderful ladies have any thoughts?  What sort of mattress do you use?  Any that you'd highly recommend, or any you'd warn me to stay away from?

Re: N3TR - Mattress Recommendations?

  • We have a pillowtop mattress (DH got it just before we met, so about 5 years ago). It does its job, but wore out quickly and and pillowtop is all dented in. It was like a $400 mattress, so I wouldn't go too cheap. We can't wait to get a new one. I would love a memory foam one, but we like different softness levels (he likes firm, I like medium-soft), so we have considered getting the sleep number bed so we can adjust each side. Hope that helps a little. FTR, we have tried both. Memory foam does get hot in the summer, so the cooling kind seems great. If you live in a mostly colder place, go for the regular.

  • We are super, super lucky because a woman from church moved away and sold her full-size Tempurpedic memory foam mattress plus solid-wood mission style bed to my parents for $500, for a gift for us when we moved to the US. It was in her guest room and was hardly used...now we've slept in it for 3 years of our marriage and it makes a difference in every day of our lives. It's a little small for couples but I am a cuddler and chase DH to the wall in a bigger bed anyways so I love it!

I'm a side sleeper and it really helps my shoulders and hips feel better. Piled up with several of grandma's homemade quilts, a thick comforter, and at least half a dozen pillows...this is how Bunny survives WNY winters. :)

  • We bought a new mattress a couple of years ago, didn't realize how expensive they are, geez. We shopped around, I know we went to Sleepy's and they were way too expensive. We ended up getting the best deal at Macy's, but I'm not sure where you live. @Rumbera28‌ your mattress review cracked me up.

  • Thanks all for the advice!  I am definitely not looking forward to mattress shopping.  There are about 4 "discount" mattress places with a half mile of each other near our house so it'll definitely be a long process to find the best deal.

@Rumbera28 and @DaydreamSam I totally appreciate your honesty.  I was actually wondering that about the foam mattresses so I'm happy to have some first hand information.

I actually think we both have a preference for medium-firm mattresses, but since we've never actually bought one together, and both ours and the guest bed one we just went with the cheapest option, it's hard to know what we'd pick if given a choice!

We have a full foam mattress and it's heaven to sleep on, but I find sex on it less than stellar.  You get less traction and bounce.   Luckily DH is in very good shape but frankly I would have liked a little assistance in terms of physics.
Ahh, this helps to explain so much...since we moved here, I thought we were just getting older/boring or lazy from stress or something because we seem to settle into a position and just kind of stay there each time Lol. But since you mention that it does seem to be a fight against physics on this foam mattress compared to the really firm one we had before! Maybe it's time to set up my old bed as a "guest" room....

  • @lemonliz‌ @Fightersince83‌ @Rcvb22‌ we went today and got a setts iComfort gel memory foam! It won't be delivered for a few weeks, but we can't wait!! I though DH would want a firmer one, but he liked the slight give with firmness beneath it. Thanks all! (Now we just have to see how sex on it works out...)
