Have you started a starter sippy cup?

Just curious if anyone started a starter sippy cup for their LO? If so, when do you plan on completely eliminating the bottle? I gave LO 4oz of BM the other day in a Nuk 4 month sipper and she held it well and drank from it. I have given one to daycare to use as well occasionally. I EBF when she is not at daycare. My first used a bottle forever and was difficult to get off of. Am I starting too soon or do you think occasional use is ok? Thoughts....

  • Good question! I hadn't even thought about when to start this!

  • spinoff question - when can we start giving water in a sippy cup?

  • My sippy cup is arriving in the mail tomorrow! It has an interchangeable straw/ sippy spout, I'm way too excited over a sippy cup.

MY BABY IS TOO YOUNG TO NEED A SIPPY CUP! :(( :((
    Truth!

Side note: Is a straw sippy better than a regular one? Thinking of dental issues farther down the road...

  • Wow, I'm usually so impatient but I'm so not in a rush to start the whole sippy cup, solid food thing yet. I'm good with formula in a bottle for awhile!

  • We started DD1 on water in a sippy cup at 6 months at the same time as we started solids. If I remember correctly our pedi had said no more than 2oz of water per day in the beginning (but don't quote me on that). I think we'll do the same with DD2

  • We started because she's never taken a bottle well so I said forget it I'm just going to go straight to a cup why get her used to a bottle then switch it on her this late in the game. She actually drinks better from a regular cup though and I was wondering the same about water. When can we offer that? Is it when you start solids and just a little?

Those of you that have started— any of your LO's EBF and NOT use bottles and you've started? Do they still nurse okay? DD WILL take a bottle, but she only has probably a handful of times. Just wonder if maybe on those rare occasions I should try sippy over bottle (and if it doesn't work then give bottle).

We haven't started yet but DS is EBF and isn't great at taking a bottle the few times we have tried. I'm hoping he'll be better at taking either the sippy spout or straw, if he is we'll just give up on bottles
  • I've never really been able to get DD to take a bottle, save for maybe 3 times randomly in her life. Hopefully we will have more luck with the sippy cup, though I'm not really in a rush to try it...
  • I bought a sippy cup for baby girl after she kept trying to drink from my water bottle (has a straw and she was successful) but didn't use it. I got the cup with the straw instead and put a little bit of water in it and she has gotten water out of it a few times but always makes a sour face then tries again, haha. I only give it to her when she tries to grab what I'm drinking. The pedi confirmed that a little water is okay.

  • @yogasailmomma‌ those cups are crazy hard to suck on! They say babies can suck 10x harder than adults.

I don't plan to start until about 7/8 months. My little guy is 4 mths now and I figure there is no rush since he takes a bottle now. I can totally see it making sense to go from breast to cup.
  • We don't do traditional sippys around here. We'll go straight to straw cups when the time comes.

  • We EBF. I'll introduce a straw after six months. Straws are good for oral motor development.

that's what i heard about the straws. I also thought it would be easier for her to use it since she doesn't have to lift the cup over her head to sip from it.
