Ebola scare..

Is anyone else scared to death about this? It is almost making me wonder if I should wait on getting pregnant.. I mean what if they come up with vaccine and then I can't get it?? I am so confused and don't know if I am being rational even.. this is really scaring me though

  • The flu virus has killed many more people than the Ebola virus over the course of history. And it still kills people on a yearly basis. Ebola is a more exotic virus to the US, which is why it is causing so much panic. But unless you plan to travel or work in a hospital/care environment, you will more than likely never get closer than the news to it.

All of this plus measles. There have been TWO HUNDRED cases of measles in the US that could be traced to international travel since 2013. Measles, which is nine times more contagious than ebola. OP, are you this scared of measles?

  • I hope you guys are right.. I have an anxiety disorder so this type of thing is just hard to manage.. I overthink it all. I just wonder if a vaccine does become available in the coming months like they are saying, if it will be okay for pregnant women to have .. I wouldn't want to not be able to have it.  I have measles vaccine so I can't get that.

Chances are you wouldn't be getting an ebola vaccine even if one were available. The risk is infinitesimally small that you would be any risk of ebola living in the United States, and if there were a vaccine to be developed it would go to countries and people where the risk is literally on their doorstep.

  • Ditto what everyone has said, and I just want to add that if your anxiety is really preventing you from living your life, maybe discuss that with a health professional.  There's no shame in asking for help.

This. I work in health care and come in contact with people with all sorts of infections and contagious diseases everyday and I am not worried about ebola at all. I would be more worried about shingles or measles. You can't plan your life on whatever the latest international health crisis is
  • The lack of education is spreading ebola!!!

  • thank you.. that helps.. I am in counseling for anxiety.. I need to bring this up though. I must also add that I had a traumatic car accident years ago( was in a coma) so anything with possible death just causes the PTSD stuff to get worse.. I know I probably sound crazy, but try not to judge me.. I keep reading all this stuff on the news and its scaring me to death. saying it might go airborne, etc.. I am trying to keep it rational but unfortunately anxiety is anything but that..

But there is no evidence that it is going to go airborne and even if it does, I assume that you do not live in West Africa. You would still need to be with in a few feet of someone to have to worry about airborne illnesses.
  • You've nothing to worry about.  Although it is a very serious disease, if you read up on how it is transmitted and other facts about it you will feel much better.  The media is using scare tactics for your attention and ratings, and it is working on many others, not just yourself.  Educate yourself before making any decisions.
