Cloth Diapering

Diapers sitting over a week! Help!

Over a week ago our washing machine broke and we are still waiting for a part to come in which means our dirty diapers have been sitting for awhile. The smell is ridiculous since I forgot about them in the diaper pail. My question is, what can I soak them in to get the stench out while waiting for our washing  machine to get rid of the ammonia smell? I can't believe I let them sit this long!
Thanks!

  • I'd be taking a trip to the laundromat. I'm not the expert here, but I probably just do my normal wash routine ASAP at the laundromat. If they still smelled after washing, or if any of them have mold, do a bleach wash with lots of rinses.

I could be wrong, but I'm not sure it will do you any good to soak them in anything now unless you are going to wash them right away.

    Sorry about your washing machine!!

  • Water.

I would rinse over and over and over in warm water until you get all the pee and poo out.  Then I would wash them using the normal routine, then maybe a bleach wash if they still stink.  I wouldn't soak them in anything.  That isn't very good for the diapers, and is a drowning hazard for infants.

  • Thanks ladies!
I guess I will rinse, rinse, and rinse again with water and then wash by hand.
    Thanks!

If you don't have access to a laundry mat, can you put together a camp style washer?  That would at least be a better alternative to hand washing in the sink.

  • You could use the Lucy method in the bathtub. Stomp stomp stomp. Them reward your self with a trip to the chocolate factory.

That is a good idea. Had to google it but it would work! Thanks!

  • Only fill it about half way full of diapers, or it will be hard to wash and rinse. :)
