Mittens for Nighttime

Lo isn't a fan of swaddling at night because she loves to put her arms up and stretch out. So she sleeps in a sleep sack, but this keeps her hands exposed. With it being cooler in the house at night, her hands get cold. We have put the mittens that stop her from scratching on her to keep her warm- but they always fall off some time during the night. I could go buy ones that cover up her hands, but quite frankly I have so many pjs and sacks that I can't see spending more money... Any suggestions?

Re: Mittens for Nighttime

  • We haven't really used any once we left the hospital, but i've seen recommendations NOT to use the detached ones for risk of suffocation. What's recommended is the PJ's with sleeves that have those end that flip and cover hands.
I only had one pair of those and didn't go out of my way to replace others.

You could rig something like that by sewing one side of the mittens onto the sleeves and then flipping them over your baby's hands... Or adding snaps, one on the underside, one in top of the sleeve and matching one on the mittens. Don't think that's really complicated, but then I am pretty handy with sewing so maybe I'm underestimating it.
Oh also, I recently saw a friend of mine stick a pair of baby socks on her LO's hands when it suddenly got cold in the house and she didn't have any mittens handy. You could try that.

  • I wouldn't cover them. At some point you'll have to stop doing it anyway. Also, babies use their hands to self-soothe. They've had access to them in the womb for months. I've never understood covering them.
