Operation "Bye, bye soother"

So DH was home with DS today and took away his soother for nap time. He doesn't get one at daycare so we thought he would be ok with it. He cried 20 minutes then played for 40 before sleeping for 2 hours. Tonight, I put DS down after bath and books and he immediately asked for soo soo. I said no that he didn't need it, that he had his monkey and blankie. He cried for about 15 minutes and every 10 minutes or so cries a bit then sit up then lays down. It's been 40 minutes and although he isn't asleep yet he's settling himself down. Fingers crossed he handles this well. If it does go well then next week we are going to move him to his toddler bed. My C section is 7 weeks from yesterday so I really need to get my ass in gear and start getting things ready. Where has the time gone!!!

Re: Operation "Bye, bye soother"

  • Update: it took him about an hour to fall asleep, with his longest crying being about 15 minutes right at the beginning. He cried on and off a few times but never more than a minute. We'll see how he does through the night. He has definitely surprised me in a good way. I've let daycare know and she will throw them away before he gets there tomorrow so there's no chance of finding one. Let's see how the next few days go!

  • DS never took one, although there were definitely times I wish he would have taken something rather than my nipple to calm him.  My niece had a harder time getting rid of hers, and my ILs talk about my SIL being really attached when she was a toddler.  My niece broke the habit at grandma's house in a weekend.  They just didn't send any with and made sure all the ones at home were thrown out before they came back.  Grandma and grandpa did lots of activities during the day with her, so she was extra tired for naps and bed time, and she fussed a little bit, but otherwise she didn't have many issues.  My ILs said they trimmed the tips off them (on recommendation from their Dr. I believe) because then the suction doesn't work, or something like that.  Anyway, they said once the tips were trimmed off, SIL had no interest in them.

  • Ben only gets his during naps and bedtime now- but he knows he can only have it in bed, and now that he has a toddler bed he climbs in for quick snuggles with bink and monkey randomly throughout the day. We just switched him out of the crib last week, baby brother is coming in january, and around that time I think he might be ready to actually start potty training- I don't want to wean him off the bink too and have it be too much for him at once

  • It has gone WAY better than I thought. Tonight he only cried a few minutes and took less time than last night to get to sleep. Sometimes I think I make things into a big deal and then DS just rolls with it. Next up....toddler bed!
