Can you see if you can find a good covered OB before you decide to switch? If all the in network OBs suck, it might be worth staying on a more expensive plan, but I am all for saving money where I can!

I don't envy your position. I would go with the more affordable option. But I would make an appointment with the OB and bring the list of approved doctors and see if he can recommend any. I often trust the judgement of a medical professional that I respect. Cuz you're right, you can never predict how the birth will be. Or of any postpartum issues. I had a mostly by the book pregnancy with DD right up until 36.5 weeks. Ended up with an emergency c-section. And then I had postpartum hypertension for 6 weeks plus a baby that wasn't gaining weight appropriately which resulted in almost double to triple the amount of doctor and midwife appointments than most people had/

Now I'm not trying to scare you I'm just sharing my story. Many ladies have zero issues. But you never know.

I agree with @southernyankeegirl‌ .. I would see what the current OB are like on the new plan before committing to something. GL!

I'm going to offer a different opinion. I value trust and a dr (as you put it) that focuses on what's truly medically necessary. Too many doctors jump to c sections because it's less risky but it's not always the best decision for you. I would really consider this long and hard. Also think about the other doctors that are within the practice that they rotate with because in reality you will not know who you get on game day and you have to be comfortable with all

Certainly not saying that's the new doctors in the new network aren't good but you have to judge (gut feel) if you feel as comfortable trusting their judgement as you do with your current. 

Does the new plan cover out of network doctors?  Usually they do just at lower coverage.

Oh and wanted to add GL, it's a hard decision. I've been with my OB for over 7 years so I know they feeling of having built that rapport

I have been seeing my OB for 9 years so I get it....but I would switch. If you live in a big city, you are going to have numerous, highly rated, qualified doctors to choose from. I'm a worrier and cheap though, so I just wouldn't want to risk having a financial unknown.

I would 1000% recommend you get a referral from your current doctor before you leave, they will recommend someone who they admire/have similar views with. You can also interview doctors beforehand to get a feel.

I'm sorry it's a sucky situation.

I would definitely meet doctors before switching and make sure you feel comfortable.

 I gave up my OB/GYN that liked when I switched to HMO plan... I regret it, to be honest. I have a ton of doubts about my current practice but got stuck due to not being able to switch due to HMO rules until it was "too late" in my pregnancy (keep this in mind, many OB/GYN won't take you 3rd trimester).

In the end, it IS saving me a TON of money being on the HMO vs PPO for pregnancy purposes, but I admit I am not as confident with the doctors

I would take the better coverage for less money. I would also approach your long-term OB and ask him to sign up with that particular insurance. If he's that great of a doctor who cares about his patients, he will! My GP just did that. We had to switch insurance companies last year. We switched to a company that my GP of 8 years did not participate with. So she looked into it and applied to partner with them! It did take several months, but finally it happened. You never know... good things can happen in unexpected places!
