Have you experienced BH yet?

I like clicky polls and was just wondering how many of you ladies had experienced Braxton Hicks contractions so far. I haven't experienced them and I'm a FTM at 31 weeks.

Re: Have you experienced BH yet?

  • Non-painful BH. My ute gets all hard after an orgasm. I find it fascinating.
A few of my girl friends said they got them after orgasms in the 3rd tri. I've had plenty of those but so far nothing.

  • I didn't start getting them until around this time with DD and even so, they weren't really painful until really close to the end. This pregnancy, I've been getting them since around 15/16 weeks? They didn't become super painful until recently. They woke me up they were SO bad, consistent, close together a few mornings ago that we almost headed into L&D. Thankfully they went away about 2 hours later

    I HATE THEM.

  • Nothing yet, but FTM so I don't know what they are like. Do they hurt? Is it like cramps? I haven't had anything that would seem remotely close.

I thought the only difference between real contractions and BH is that real contractions are progressive (cause effacement, dilation, etc) and one is just the uterine muscle contracting? Or is there more to it than that?

That must be scary to have the real deal so early!

  • Ugh. All the time. It doesn't hurt, my stomach just gets super tight and uncomfortable. I had them with dd too, they just started much earlier this time.

Yup that would be the technicality on that one and I've been having changes since they started lol. Its not massive times a day so *shrugs* worry when i need to worry. I'm  PTL girl so its expected for me who needs the practice ones I go right for the real ones lol.

  • I get them a lot. They didn't used to hurt, but they are getting more and more uncomfortable. They feel like menstrual cramps, but not a constant pain. And my stomach becomes hard as a rock.

I've had them since first trimester.  FTM
  • I've been getting them pretty frequently. Not with any sort of pattern, but multiple times per day.
  • Definitely. I started really noticing them around 22/23 weeks. This is my 5th. I don't recall noticing BH until 32ish weeks with my first.

  • Third time mom here, and this is the first pregnancy I can state with firm conviction that I've had them. I  either never noticed, didn't recognize them, or didn't have them with the girls.

I get them a lot after orgasm and sometimes just randomly when chilling on the couch or in bed. It's definitely a strange sensation.

  • FTM.  I haven't had them.  Asked the doc about them at my 30 week and she said I'll likely get them later on, but maybe not at all, especially if I stay well hydrated (which I do).  I almost wish I was feeling them - it would be reassuring, in a way, to know my body is practicing for the real thing.  But since it's not abnormal to not feel them, I'm not concerned.

Same here. I'm also kind of hoping to feel them so I can get an idea of what a contraction feels like. I never have period cramps so I feel like I have nothing to prep me for the sensations at all.

  • FTM and apparently I have started having them this past weekend. I went to my appointment yesterday and mentioned that I have some uncomfortable cramping. The nurse raised a red flag so they checked me for pre-term labor (better safe than sorry, I guess) and everything was normal. They checked my cervix and baby's heart rate. She said it was probably BH-I had no idea what they felt like, I would describe it as an annoying mild menstrual cramp. My doctor recommended taking some tylenol and a soaking bath if it happens again.
  • Tylenol for BH?? That seems way unnecessary.

  • Never had them with DS but this time I did experience them while nursing DS.
  • They make me nervous, but are usually a result of dehydration, having to pee or overdoing it. If I drink enough water and lie down, they usually stop.

    BabyFruit Ticker
  • When I was a FTM with DS I didn't feel a thing. The day of my induction at 41 weeks I went into the hospital - they said you're having a contraction every 5 minutes - you don't feel that? I didn't feel them until after my water was broke. This time around totally different.

  • Third time mom, I have them pretty much all day every day and half the night. I wish I could explain to my ute that a c-section is coming so all this "practice" is totally wasted and just annoying.
  • Tylenol for BH?? That seems way unnecessary.

I would think so too... the first thing I ask myself when I get one is, "have I been drinking enough water today?" I always wind up drinking more water just in case and BH goes away fairly quickly for me.

I think so, too. Luckily they haven't been "painful" for me, just mild and uncomfortable. Apparently BH can be painful enough for some people to take medicine?

    Why is that funny?
Because they are in enough pain to take something for it?
No, pain isn't funny at all! I have a whole bottle of Tylenol that I haven't opened on standby just incase something comes up because it's pretty much the only thing approved by my doc. I just think it's funny that she recommended that to me when I told her I wasn't in pain at all. I guess she meant if they got worse.
  • I get them all the time with this baby. So much that I have called the midwife on call thinking something was wrong. I never got them with my first.

Sorry. ..but the haha just is not funny even though you "claim" you didn't intend it that way.

As someone who was hospitalized early on with pain I don't find joking about pain or people's different pain thresholds very amusing to even partially joke about.

Keep back peddling, it might get you somewhere.

  • @slaps Someone else said that they thought Tylenol was unnecessary. I know that some people experience BH differently and it's not always unnecessary, or my doc wouldn't have recommended it. Some don't even know it's going on (like me) and some have it so bad that they have to go to the hospital. Everyone's body is different and I wasn't discrediting their pain, I will be happy to take Tylenol if mine get any worse!

@smack427 - seems like a simple case of what you said and what you meant weren't the same thing... seems like something basic enough to be forgiven and learned from.

Wouldn't want to make a habit of such behavior...

It's already a habit for her. She does it all the time.
