2nd Trimester

Sharp Pains! :(

I will be 18 weeks tomorrow, and last night I was awoken by the worst pain I have ever felt on my right side, it was like a knife was being driven into my back, and the pain spread down to my inner thigh. I have never felt anything like it. I dint know if it's just my ligaments stretching out, or if it's something I should be concerned about. The pain went away after a few minutes, but it scared me... Anyone else ever had this?

If it spread down your thigh, it is not your ligaments. Round ligament pain will be on your lower sides of your pelvis, near your ovaries or a little lower.

Things that come to mind are dehydration and sciatica. Drink plenty of water (80 oz a day) and make an appointment with a chiropractor. It's good to see a chiropractor during pregnancy because the growth of the baby puts a lot of strain on your back and pelvis. Chiropractic care can also be linked to shorter and easier labors with better fetal positioning. If you are really worried, I would also call your doctor, but this seems better suited for a chiropractor.

Edit: 18 weeks is very early to see sciatica if you aren't gaining too much and started at a healthy weight with no issues like this prior. But still, could be.

  • I disagree with pp ... it could be RLP.  Some of my RLP has shot pain down my crotch and legs. It could also be sciatica which I have had since 13 weeks (carrying twins) but my pain isn't that sharp it is more of a numbing tingling pain.  I do agree that more water is super important and speak to your doctor if it happens again.
