Trouble TTC

How soon is too soon to want answers?

So my husband and I haven't used any type of birth control for 16 months. We have only officially been trying for 4 months but I'm frustrated.  They say that 85% will end up pregnant after a year of no protection so I guess that is getting into my head. My husband feels we should just keep going for another 6 months but I'm wondering when other people decided to go to the doctor and get checked out.  My cycle if fairly regular but I will have a month here and there where my cycle ends up being 35+ days.  Just looking for a little advice! I don't want to be overly obsessive about it if this seems normal.

Re: How soon is too soon to want answers?

  • Thanks. In his mind it's only been 3-4 months since we said "OK we're trying now" so not that long but he's totally forgetting about the year before that which is what worries me. I'm sorry but what is RE?

A reproductive endocrinologist. They are trained in evaluating and treating infertility (much more so than OBs or PCPs) and therefore the best type of doctor to see if you want to start getting answers.

    Thank you :)
  • Thanks, I am starting temping this month to help. I already used ovulation predictors to no avail so I'll add something else.
  • I agree if you have been having unprotected sex for 16 months then it might be time to see an RE, but that's regular sex. I went to an RE rather quickly, after 4 months off birth control, but that's because I was 38, now 39 (still not KU). If I was under 35 I still wouldn't have gone until after a year of trying. I will add that if you really have only been actively trying for 4 months, you might want to try OPKs and give it some more time. Welcome and good luck.

  • I'm going to try to find out tomorrow what is covered and what isn't and maybe just try to make a regular gyn appointment to get some advice. I hope everything is normal.
