OPK Confusion --- UPDATE !

UPDATE:
Took an OPK this morning and it came up positive! ;)
Also had my appt with my OB this morning and he said he could definitely tell I was in ovulation mode! He said that from what he could tell, all looks great, but because I am over 35 and it's been a good 6 months, he sent a referral over to an RE. I have Kaiser so it's all connected. It felt good to see and hear positive things this morning. ;)
Thank you for the comments, advice, and most of all support. xoxo

Hey Ladies -
According to my Ovia App which is pretty damn accurate as to when AF is scheduled to arrive says that my peak fertile day is TODAY. Another app also says that I should be ovulating in these days. So I did an OPK yesterday and today, and it shows no LH surge at all!! :(

What could this mean? Obviously that I'm not ovulating right about now, right??

ETA: I have an appt with my OB/GYN tomorrow!! ;)

Re: OPK Confusion --- UPDATE !

  • I'm no expert in opks by any means, but more than likely if you're not seeing any surge at all, that probably means that you are not ovulating right now. Just out of curiosity, when during the day are you testing? I was following the instructions on the opk pack I got which said NOT to use fmp, so I always waited until I got home from work. I thought they might've been defective since I was seeing the same thing you were (no surge at all when I was expecting to see one) so I switched to using a fertility monitor (one that has the low, high, peak) and that one said to test first thing in the morning. I started using both types of tests just to see what my results would be, and lo and behold, my evening tests never showed a surge (or any result for that matter), but my morning ones would show some type of result.

I think from what others have said, if you really want to try and catch that surge, test more than once a day, and maybe start testing earlier in the cycle just in case it came earlier than you thought it might? Also, from my understanding, just because AF shows up on time every month, that doesn't mean you ovulate at the same time every month. it may be within a day or two of when you "think" you might be ovulating, but even a day or two can make a big difference.

  • @flyliceandcoffee - Thank you. Yesterday I tested when I got home from the gym. Not the best time I know, but I was curious. And today I tested first thing in the morning. I'll just keep testing and talk to my OB about it tomorrow.

  • How frustrating!  I agree--keep testing, more than once a day, and maybe start earlier next cycle.

  • Hey gal. I would recommend trying between 10 a.m. and noon and then 8 p.m. for the best readings. I also try not to get too stressed out because of my OPKs. Keep having sex when you have good CM.

I was under the impression that the Ovia app and other apps like it aren't very useful. Also, I'm the opposite of PP: I never see a positive if I test in the morning, only the afternoon, so I think you probably just have to test twice a day to make sure you don't miss it, good luck!

ETA: Is this the first time you've used OPKs? It took me awhile to figure them out.

And as an anecdote, I have a 28 day, like clockwork, cycle. I never ovulate on CD14, I'm always later, CD16-18 usually, so if an app was assuming I had a 14 day LP, I would miss my fertile window every month. I would keep testing every day!

  • @obscurereference - My Ovia App has been super accurate in predicting when AF is due to arrive, but I guess it's a little off on the Ovulation date. Looks like I ovulate a few days later too. ;)

This is what was happening to me last spring. My cycle is always regular, but I seem to ovulate on CD 17, and I missed it more than once by assuming it was CD14. I'm wondering if it's common for ovulation to happen later in your cycle as you get older...

OP, I'm glad the appointment went well!

While Ovia might be good at predicting your overall cycle length, that does nothing to confirm when you might be ovulating.  Only Fertility Friend has ever been accurate at that in my experience, and for so many of the ladies all over TB boards.  Ovia just doesn't analyze temps and other signs nearly as well as FF seems to.

Are you temping or just tracking periods and OPKs?  Temping is the only real way to truly track ovulation, OPKs can help predict it but you can also have multiple surges, so without a temp to provide another indicator they really don't paint a complete picture.

  • @TAT2MAMI: Another option is to set your alarm for a random time like 4 a.m. every day (or an hour before you have to get up). I'm the type of sleeper that I can usually take my temp and go right back to sleep. I just write down the temp on a piece of paper so that I don't go into the app at that moment.

:-/  How long do you think you have to lay there?  It literally takes only a minute to temp - of the many things we all try to do to up our chances of a BFP every month, and the minutes if not hours we fret and worry over everything, temping is probably the least by far in terms of time investment!
