I bathe in coco butter from the moment I found out I was pregnant. At 32 weeks my tummy gave in and the stretch marks appeared. You either will get them or you won't. No amount of cream or oil will prevent them.
I used mothers friend w my first and have no stretch marks. Using it again w this pregnancy. I know its said its genetics, my mom has lots of sm fron myself and sister. I'll keep using it.
This made me lol. Like previous posters have said stretch marks can't be prevented but there is no harm in moisturizing. I have never met anyone who did not get stretch marks during pregnancy. Mine did fade but some people have purple stretch marks that stay dark.
I understand why people get confused about this, especially because there are so many products marketed towards stretch mark prevention. If you learn about your skin layers you will see that it would be impossible for something applied to the surface to reach and effect the bottom layer where stretch marks form. Stretch marks are tears in the lowest layer. If a lotion could reach them, it would also be absorbed into your blood stream and very unsafe to use every day.
The propensity to get stretch marks is based in genetics. Keeping your skin lubricated will help it to not get itchy as it stretches and maybe help it bounce back after the birth. The best things you can do is drink tons of water to keep all layers of your skin hydrated, limit your weight gain through a healthy pregnancy diet and exercise (the bigger you get, the more skin stretches), and lightly exfoliate to increase collagen production. I personally use a homemade sugar and olive oil scrub once or twice a week and then put on coconut oil afterwards. I also don't use soap all over very often and when I do it's diluted dr. bronners because soap strips skin of natural oils and can cause both dryness and oiliness, both of which are signs of a skin imbalance.
Also about genetics - you are a 100% unique person made of both sides of your family. There is no way to tell from someone elses experience what yours will be. My mom has zero stretch marks anywhere on her body... but she also was a Pilates instructor during her pregnancies with both me and my sister and gained less than 20 lbs each time. She also drinks water like it's going out of style and takes good care of her skin (not over washing, etc).
I have stretch marks from before pregnancy. Light silvery white ones on my breasts and hips from growing so much near the start of high school. I seriously went from an A to a C cup in a year. So I may get lots of pregnancy marks, I have no idea. Most of it is really out of your control.
I use bio oil simply because I love the way it makes my skin feel. I put it on both damp or dry skin. That said, you can't prevent stretch marks... if you're going to get them, you will.
