Too unique?

Sorry this is going to be another name post but I didn't want to tell my family or friends potential names yet.

I love the name Brooklyn but I don't want people to call her Brooke so my husband and I agreed we needed to choose something different. I also really like Bexley but our last name ends in -ley and my husband thinks it sounds funny so he suggested Bexlyn- a happy combo between both.

At first I thought it was silly bc I've never heard this name in my life but I am now actually really starting to consider it. Is this taking a unique name a little too far? Does it sound like a silly name?

Re: Too unique?

  • Brooklyn and Bexley are not my style, but not bad either.  Bexlyn sounds like a made up word to me, like you are trying to hard almost.

I think that Brooklyn is VERY popular right now, but who am I to talk, my kids will be William and Harper LOL!

Yeah I'm trying really hard on a cute little girl name. It seems like most of my favorites end in -ley which is a no go for my husband bc of the wait it sounds with our last name. I had a ton of boy names picked out and even considered using one of those for a gender neutral name. I just don't know!!!

  • My friend has  Braelyn (she also has a Brooklyn) - also not a fave of mine, but it might fit with the names you've picked so far.

  • So you are team pink?  What are some of the names you do like?  Maybe we can help come up with some that don't end in -ley but sound similar to your faves.

    I love the name Braelyn.

I actually like Bexlyn too but I would spell it Bexlynn

  • I've never heard of Bexley or Bexlyn and they sound really made up to me. NMS.

Brooklyn is lovely. You can avoid people calling her Brooke by correcting them immediately, but when she gets into school then she is free to allow people to call her whatever she likes. My DS's name has a common nn that I didn't like and when anyone called him that I would politely correct them and it was never an issue after that. Now that he's a teenager and he also prefers his full name or a different nn (not the nn that I originally didn't like).

    Good luck.

  • Some of my favorites were Brailey or Bailey, Kensley and Bexley. I also like Brooklyn and Emalyn but don't like the nicknames for either since we have a Brooke and Emma in the family.

    Here are some recommendations:

Emmaline (I have a friend named Emmaline and she goes by Emmie)
    McKenzie/MacKenzie
    Macy
Riley (maybe that -ley is too close....)

  • I knowww. It sounded so awful the first time I heard it but then it started to grow on me a little. I just wanted other people's opinions! I'd say the name is a no go haha. But I reallyyyyy can't find anything that I am crazy about.

  • Hmm. I don't really like Bexlyn either. I did a search of names that started with B and ended with -lyn, since you said that -ley is pretty much off the table. What about any of these?

    Braylyn
    Braelyn

    or

    Briallen

After doing the search... there aren't a whole lot of B names that end in that -lyn sound. But you can search baby name websites specifically for names that start or end with certain letters.

MrsH11710 if you don't like a NN, then don't use it and correct people who do use it. It's NBD.  I have a friend whose son is Nicolas.  Not Nick.

So if you like Brooklyn, then go with Brooklyn and squash anyone who tries to nickname her.

This.  My son will be William.  Not Will, Bill, Willy, Billy, Liam, etc.  William.

  • My biggest concern with naming her Brooklyn is that she will be the one who wants to be called Brooke one day and there will be no avoiding it. That'd probably not a good excuse not to use a name but it does make me question that one just a little.

  • If she wants to be Brooke one day and you don't want to call her it then don't. My cousin's name is Florence. My aunt hates the nn Flo. Everyone calls my cousin Flo but my aunt. It isn't a big deal at all.

Yup, my BFF Kate is known exclusively as Kathryn at home. I even make the switch when referencing her to her parents. NBD.

  • I think it's pretty in print, but it seems sort of choppy and not very flowy, like a name that would be shorten as well. I really do love unique names though. Its funny cause i always felt that naming a girl was easier than naming a boy.
  • IMO Bexlyn sounds like a medecine :) Maybe try other B names like Blake or Blair, or with Lynne as a middle name? Or as PPs have mentioned, call your DD whatever you like, but be prepared for the inevitable nicknames that you can't control! To be honest, I don't think that would bother me!
  • @poopylove‌ lol I thought the sane thing!

My mom wanted me to stay Rebecca but I'm a Becky haha. Then again she didn't speak any English and prob didn't realize pp would call me that.

Remember that unique names are fine but think of your child and that name when she is older. Just saying...

  • I hade a friend with a daughter named Brooklyn and it has never occurred to anyone to call her Brooke. She is 6 and knows her name is Brooklyn so she introduces herself that way and that is what people call her.

I'd say if the only thing stopping you from using Brooklyn is the separate name Brooke then you should go with that.

I'm not a fan of Bexley or Bexlyn.

  • I love made-up names! I like Bexlyn, but I think I would take out the "x" and do something like Bekslyn. I just feel like the name is already unique, and the "x" is maybe too much.

At the same time, If you like Brooklyn, go with it! Call her nothing but Brooklyn and then if she likes Brooke when she's older, I guess that's her decision?
  • It's really NMS, and you will probably get that answer a lot from people before she is born. But if you really DO love it, then go for it. She will be her name one she is born (if that makes any sense....) FWIW, I prefer Brooklyn over Bexlyn by a mile.

  • Bexlyn or Bexley will be nicknamed Bex or Bexie which are much worse than Brooke IMO.

I think Ashlynn is beautiful but here is a great site that will help find names based on your likes. It looks like you like -lyn names so it's a place to start.

I love Brooklyn, Braelyn, and Brynn. I don't really see Brooke as a nn for Brooklyn but that's just my opinion ;)

  • I like Brooklyn- it's my nieces name. We all call her Bea or Brooke.
Eventually people will call her something you don't want and there just much you can do about it.

Bexley or Bexlynn sound made up to me.

  • When you posted Brooklyn I immediately thought of David Beckham's son Brooklyn. So I wouldn't think to shorten it to Brooke. I'm on the fence about Bexlyn. It sounds like a cute name for a little girl, but I'm trying to think about how it would sound in the work place, and how many times she would have to correct people misspelling or mispronouncing it. My first name is a rather original mashup of two more common names, so I have been called the wrong thing a lot on forms, by teachers, and at dr offices when they are trying to pronounce an original name. Just something to think about.

  • Not my style at all, sorry.

FWIW I am not a fan of the name "Brooke" at all and that's the go to nickname for Brooklyn....
  • I think if Brooklyn is the name you love, use it and just be sure to correct anyone who tries to call her Brooke in your presence.

How do you feel about Bryn/Brynn, Bronwen/Bronwyn or Bevin?

  • Yeck sorry I can't get on the made up name train. Bexlyn sounds like medicine or yeast infection cream to me. I like Brooklyn way better. I know a Cecilia-Dawn and everyone nn her sid and her mom hated it. Everytime someone called her sid she would correct them. Any name can be made a nn!

  • Personally, I don't like it.
  • I hate Bexlyn but it kinda reminds me that I used to know a girl named Berlyn. Still unusual but not as made up and "yoo-neek" sounding.
