21week Scan: disapponted!

I had my scan today and we thought we could see much better the baby and find out the sex...we couldn't see much,not even the face,and when we asked the sex she said: I cannot be sure but I can say 90% is a girl!!!??? Very useful thank you! So now I am in doubt she looked at the sex just from the bottom and maybe you can't see much from there!? anyway the baby is perfectly fine and that's the most important thing we are very happy!

Seeing the facial features in particular is a pretty big deal because many hard markers for downs and other disorders are ruled out that way. Most people are rescheduled if they can't see what they need to. I had to re-position about 10 times during our scan to get all the angles they needed. But maybe I am misunderstanding your post and they just weren't able to get the cute profile pictures you wanted, but got the images they needed to check development.

We aren't finding out the sex, and honestly I wouldn't trust it complete even if they told me. 20 week scans are supposed to be 95% accurate and so that 5% happens to someone. Just let it be a surprise! No need to be disappointed!

If you really want to know more you could always do an elective ultrasound. I'll admit when I had mine yesterday I was bummed they didn't do a 3d scan. But with all the measurements they did they say the baby looks great. I trust them to know. I also know my dr. will seek me in for more sneak peeks!

I most certainly understand your disappointment. Seeing baby's facial features and finding out baby's sex are very exciting things but remember that baby is healthy and there are no concerns there. Chin up..you'll meet and fall in love with your lil peanut soon enough.

Your baby is healthy, I think as scans go you're doing pretty well. Also 90% sounds as definite as can be to me. Count your blessings! Congrats on your healthy baby girl!

Are you not finding out the sex?  That is news, you have NEVER told us that.

as for your deep seeded mistrust of A/S determining the sex accurately..... it is weird.

I'm sorry, but you couldn't see your baby's face and you're upset that your tech is 90% sure your baby is a girl and you aren't sure she checked thoroughly? I'm really hoping you mean you didn't get the cute face shots you wanted, otherwise those are some interesting priorities. The whole point of the a/s is to check the baby is developing correctly.

Thanks everyone… I think it's just the feeling in that moment that you expect to finally see your baby and you can't see well…anyway the most important thing is that the baby is healthy! And we will get a 4D later on so we will know the sex for sure!  :x :x

At my a/s we got a face shot.  It looked like something in a horror movie.  The tech even warned it wasn't normally cute, but scary.  She didn't even bother to print that shot (ok with me)

I technically had two a/s's and the baby's face was not cute at all at 17 weeks or 22 weeks! So you really aren't missing much.

To the OP: glad to hear all is healthy!

I had to go for a walk and come back cause my us tech said that a profile shot of the baby's face is a necessary shot for the a/s scan. Maybe you will have to go back to finish at a later date and get another chance to find out the sex.

I have to go back next Monday so they can do another scan. They got most everything they needed except baby's face. I had to move multiple times and baby just wasn't cooperating. She had her arm blocking her face. They spent that extra time verifying her sex so I really appreciate that.

I feel you. My little girl was throwing a fit during the scan that we couldn't get a good 3D photo of her, they all look blurry and blob-esque. Have them reschedule you for a couple weeks out and see if they have better luck then.

I agree. 3D/4D face shots can be a little creepy!

The main purpose of the 20 week ultrasound is to make sure the baby is healthy. Finding out the sex is just an added bonus.

OP, congrats on a healthy baby!

LOL, DH mentioned that he thought our baby looked like something Mulder found in an abandoned government warehouse. We got one cute picture, a couple of fuzzy ones, and a foot picture that I love even though it is really fuzzy, too.

It's okay to be disappointed, but keep in mind that as long as the tech could measure everything and check to make sure the baby's development is okay, the scan has fulfilled its purpose. My brother's girlfriend's tech (she is about 18 weeks now) says that they are 90% sure, its a boy, and even my trained eyes can make out the little scrotum and penis.

If you are really worried about it, just keep purchases gender neutral until you can see the little boy or girl parts for yourself. :-)

They actually determine the sex of the baby by looking from the bottom...that's the best way to see the sex organs...

I understand, I will be disappointed if I don't get to see a little at my a/s. My last ultrasound at 12 weeks the baby literally had its back to us and would just throw out a hand or foot when poked. Refused to move. I might have an elusive one... We're not going 3D photos though. I'd rather save the money for when he or she is born. Plus, those things look creepy!

I'd say 90% is pretty good though!

While it's fun to see the face shot, our tech told us to take it with a grain of salt and that he would most likely not look that way. Honestly I'm relieved she said that, during the 4D he just kept looking like a cross between Yoda and Voldemort...

Mine too! Except we got three printed shots! We call it "creepy baby face". They are probably much cuter later on!

So glad we aren't the only ones with creepy face shots! Yippee!!

My MIL is obsessed with seeing u/s pictures of the baby. I'm like, dude why do you want to see pictures so badly? They aren't that great of quality and she doesn't look cute at all!
