Air travel with infant formula

Next Friday my husband and I are traveling with baby girl to Disney world. It is our first time traveling with an infant on a flight. I was planning on taking the premixed ready to eat liquid formula in my carry on to cover her meals for the first day there and pack the rest in my checked luggage.I read today that while they'll allow premixed infant formula, TSA could possibly open the bottles of formula for an air test. My concern is if they open all the formula bottles, I obviously have no way to refrigerate after opening, so all those bottles of formula could potentially go to waste. What are your ladies experience with air travel and baby formula.

Re: Air travel with infant formula

  • They have never opened any premixed bottles of formula, just did a visual inspection of the formula while it was inside the bottle and sealed in a ziploc bag. I premixed my own with the formula powder and had no issues instead of bringing the store bought ones. They like it better when you keep the bottles to less than 150ml's per bottle (at least that is what I was told). I usually kept them at 100ml's per bottle and only brought like 2 bottles with the intention of mixing powdered formula if needed inside the gate. You will probably get pulled aside during the screening and have a residual test done on your hands. This has happened to me every time I went through security with formula.

I would assume that if the store bought ones are sealed, you shouldn't have any issue at all since they are obviously sealed. Just take a few bottles and keep some powdered formula on hand in case anything should happen. You can buy water once you get through security and mix your own bottles.

Eta: what type of water do you use when it comes to mixing powder on the go? Just a bottle of aquafina or something like that?

  • This thread reminds me, @arya808, I would still like to hear about your recent flight experience. Forgive me if you've already posted about it and I missed it.

Agreed! Give us all the baby flying tips!

@tarajeannette‌ @pinkyxboo‌ I haven't posted it yet. I'm going to do it when I get home on Friday, that way I can write about the return trip as well. We're leaving tomorrow afternoon and we will arrive in DC on Friday morning. 18-hour trip with a 7-hour layover. Lord have mercy!

Omg that makes me feel lame for worrying about my measly 2 hour flight. Good luck on the way home!
