May 2014 Moms

Reflux Check-In (10/6)

Apologies for being MIA last week!  Things got so hectic and the week flew by!  So sorry for not posting the check-in!  I have noticed though that there are only 2 or 3 moms doing the check-in lately as opposed to the dozen or so we had when we started the check-ins.  Is this something that is still helpful to any of you?  Would it make sense to move to a bi-weekly or monthly check-in instead of weekly if weekly isn't as helpful anymore?  Happy to do whatever you guys want!

This is a check-in for May mamas of LOs with reflux. Returning or new to the Check-In, we'd love to hear from you!

1 - How old is your LO and how long has s/he been treated for reflux?

2 - How is LO doing? Any new developments, successes or challenges since the last Check-In?

3 - Any questions or tips for other reflux mamas, or anything else to share?

4 - What is LO's current favorite toy/book/apparatus?

Re: Reflux Check-In (10/6)

  • I do like this thread still but im exhausted now so ill do it tomorrow! :)
  • 1 - DD will be 20 weeks old tomorrow (10/9).  She was diagnosed with reflux ~ 8.5 weeks and had been on meds (first Zantact for a week, then replaced by Prevacid) until last week.

2 - Starting on 9/22 we gave her the Prevacid every other day and now she's completely off of it.  I definitely notice that she's spitting up A LOT LESS.  BUT, yesterday and today she had a hard time falling asleep and burping.... I tried to give her gas drops and they seemed to work a little bit.  She's been really squirmy though while eating.... I'm afraid it's uncomfortable for her to eat now.  :(  I do not know what to do...

3 - I feel defeated.  I didn't think that the Prevacid was really working.  Though, now that she's off it, I guess I can see that it was working a little bit.  But the question DH and I need to consider is whether it was working enough to deal with the potential adverse effects from the Prevacid, which is not approved by the FDA for use on infants.  Being a mom is hard!

4 - Anything she can shove in her mouth, which lately includes her floor mirror, her play mat, and my hands!  She is surprisingly adept at grabbing my finger and navigating it into her mouth!  She's strong too!!!

  • So sorry :( I was super busy today but I will do this tomorrow!
  • Well... im awake, ill just do it now! :)

    1. DD has been on zantac since june. She switched to prevacid in august I think and it made her reflux worse so we went back to Zantac.

    2. We have decreased from 1 ml 3 times per day to .4ml 2 times per day. She seems to be good with this amount. Still spitting up little bits here and there though.

    3. @giggler25‌ I am so sorry to hear that your lo is still miserable. I know it is so hard to see your lo uncomfortable and its frustrating not being able to help :/

    4. She likes toys that make noise and toys she can chew on!

We recently switched pediatricians And our first topic of discussion was reflux and meds. He told us that Prevacid in infants basically has a placebo effect and he prefers zantac. So he moved DS back to zantac at the max dose of 1.5 ml twice a day. Thought that was interesting...

Have you noticed any changes now that DS is on Zantac instead of Prevacid?

@bridetobe9132013 -- Glad your DD is doing well on the decreased dosage!

Forgot to mention -- I'm going to host the checkout bi-weekly going forward unless any objections!  :)
