NBR: Dishwashers

so my DH has done the dishes in our home for years. We have had a dishwasher, but for some reason he has always preferred to do them by hand. Now that we have our daughter, he'd rather spend time with her than hand washing dishes. We haven't used our dishwasher in over 5 years and it's a very old model (15+ years). I'm worried that something will go wrong the first time we use it since its been sedentary this whole time. Maybe the hoses are dried out and cracked, seals not working properly, etc. Does anyone have any advice for starting an old dishwasher after years?

Thanks guys. I think we decided to wait and buy a newer, more efficient model anyway.
