Thoughts on the name Michaela

I have loved the name for years...even before I met my husband Michael who goes by Mike 99% of the time. My name is Michelle. My question I guess is, is Michaela too similar to Mike or Michelle to name our daughter? We are having boy/girl twins and our other name choice at the moment is Connor or Lucas for the boy.

Haha had to chime in that I have a Conor Michael, I'm married to a Mike, and most likely we will be naming our new babe Lucas! My name also rhymes with Michelle, lol.

I love Michaela, but I do agree w @elephantsonpatrol‌ ... Hmmm, maybe at least spell Michaela like MiKayla, so the connection isn't as apparent? If you really love Michaela, I say choose a similar M boy name too ;) go big or go home! (Does your last name also start with M? you're not a Michelle Mitchell, right??)

Edit; had more to add. On my phone and posted before I intended.
  • It is pretty similar - could you do it as a middle name?
  • I love the name but it is a bit matchy. My sister is Michaela and we often call her Mike or Mikey.
I think your son would feel a tad left out too.
    Maybe as a middle name?

  • I find it way too matchy matchy personally.

    This^^^^^^^^ Let her be unique.

  • I like the name michaela. I have a beautiful niece by that name (her nickname is Mickey)

However in this case i think they are to similar.

  • A friend of mine is named Michaela and people commonly mispronounce so she ends up telling everyone her name is Michelle.

  • Thank you everyone!
  • I love personally the name.
  • How would you pronounce it? Mine is pronounced Ma-KI-La spelled Michaela.
  • Sorry, just noticed everyone was posting nicknames as well. I personally don't like the nn Mickey. My family calls me Kila or Ki.
  • I love the name. It's beautiful. And although I think it would be fine to honor your husband, I think once you add your name to the mix it becomes a bit much. I agree that it would be a great mn option.

  • I like it but then again, I'm the oddball. My daughter is Nia, I'm Kia and her Dad is Nehemiah. Twin one will be Kierri, I'm Kia and DH is Perry. I kinda like have kid name fusions.

I would suggest Mitchell as a boys name though of you wanted to include him in the fun.

Also, DH has match names is his family. FIL is Perry, DH is Perry Jr., SIL is Paris and BIL is Perryn.

  • Thanks for all the different opinions everyone! We have a few months to decide anyway...maybe it will make it easier when we decide on baby boy's name.

We would be using the nickname Kayla over anything else so Mikayla would be an option for spelling. It would also be pronounced Mi-kay-la.

I think we could def work around the other twin feeling left out. It would be far worse if one twin was named Michael or Michelle and the other an original name.

Hmmm lots to think about! :)
  • Personally I love the name Michaela and am planning on using it if we have a girl. If you spell it Makayla, it won't be as matchy. If you're planning on having another child in the future, just try not to pick an M name so the boy twin won't be the only one in the family without an M name.

  • Oh geez, please don't butcher the spelling--it's still matchy regardless.

I guess I didn't think the spelling Makayla was butchering it. It's similar to the spelling of the name Mackenzie, and I've seen it spelled that way more commonly than Michaela.

Anything more unique than Michaela is just unnecessary. Someone else suggested Mikayla as well.....both bad IMO.

  • I really like the name. It is very matchy but if you don't mind that then I would go with it. If you love the matchy matchy name thing give your son a "M" name also.
  • Great name but maybe a little too matchy.

I don't know that I agree. I prefer the spelling Mikayla and my 95 year old great grandmother spells her name Micaela so I don't feel there is one correct spelling. If anything spelling it Michaela feels like it's trying too hard to be similar to Michael.

I'm with you @tjcardoza‌ and @melmarie4 ... I suggested Mikayla at the beginning bc that's actually the only way I've ever seen it spelled IRL ... Wasn't trying to make it off the wall or overly unique or anything. I guess I've always thought there were several acceptable ways to spell that particular name.

Anyways, it's a beautiful name however you slice it :)

Edit; on the phone and using the quote feature somehow ended up w a double quote. Attempted to take one set if quotes out.
  • I think the three are a little too matchy.

FWIW I know 3 "Makayla's". I wan't aware that that was "butchering" the name. It's a pretty common spelling where I live.

  • I love the name, but in this case I think it matches too much. I don't think I would choose this one unless I planned on having the boy's name kind of match too.
  • I do think that it's a pretty name, but too similar to Michelle and Michael, but I also don't like the idea of parents naming their kids after themselves. I wouldn't do it, but In the end it's really up to you.
  • I know of a Michaela and she was the biggest little snot know to man. And she was a loosy goosy.. Knowing that, can't stand the name.
