nub theory madness.

Wtf is this!? It's like me describing what wives tales say and asking so do you think its a boy or a girl. Because wives tales are accurate. *palm to face* what makes people think nub theory is 100 percent.
I get it. You're excited to know the sex. I am too. But i could give two shits less about nub theories and wives tales.
Rant done.

  • I never understood the obsession with finding out the sex either. I mean, one way or another you're eventually going to find out, it's not going to be a mystery forever. I totally get being excited to find out the sex, I was too, but it was never all consuming like it seems to be for some people.

  • I get doing some of the OWT with your husband or friends (I remember I had a book of them with my first and my husband and I had fun doing them) but I can't fathom posting pictures of your poor child and having strangers guess. Say everyone says girl. Are you going to cry when your ultrasound tech says boy because omg! Internet strangers totally gawked at my kids stuff and told me it was a girl!!!! ? We don't know you, you don't know us. How on earth is it fun?
  • We found out we are having a boy. I will say the nub theory "worked" for us.....however, every other wives tale pointed to me having a girl. Patience is a virtue.....

  • I just cant. Its so rediculous. If it were that easy, we'd all be ultrasound technicians.
  • But it is just for funsies! /sarcasm

Dear god I thought you were serious!
  • I actually never heard of it until coming to the bump.  I kind of chuckled at it because it just sounds ridiculous.  I also never knew how common it was for people to post pictures of there child's U/S genital pics either.  Apparently, the world is crazier than I thought which is scary because on a scale from 1-10, I already assumed a "world crazy" level at a 10.
  • I have seen it mentioned a million times but still don't understand. What exactly is the "nub theory"?

FWIW, we really want the surprise and didn't find out the sex. It's just not a big deal for us and seems much more fun to wait. So I really don't understand people trying to read too much into early scan pictures -- I mean, don't you have better things to do than sit around pondering your baby's genitals? I just don't get it.

  • Maybe I'm just too smart to make any sense of that craziness lol and I just don't see why it matters. You will find out eventually one way or another, it would be stressful constantly pondering and wondering about what you may or may not have seen. No thanks!
Our U/S was at 9 weeks and 20 weeks. At 9 they all look the same - like gummy bears. And we never wanted to find out so I didn't read into the 20 week scan and turned away when she checked that area.

I can just imagine some girls in there at a 6 week scan asking for a guess at what sex the baby is.

FWIW, there does seem to be some accuracy with nub theory; not 100%, but higher than 50%. At my NT scan, the u/s tech volunteered the information, saying she was "98% sure, but don't paint the nursery yet". (She was correct.)

But if she hadn't volunteered the info, I would have just waited until 20w, no biggie. We had to wait until 20w to know for sure anyway. And I trust an u/s tech a lot more than untrained strangers on the internet. If someone is so impatient to get an idea, they should ask the u/s tech for a guess (which they may or may not offer).

  • I'm sure some experienced techs know what to look for and can make a good guess. But as far as regular people... I don't know.  My 12 week ultrasound was hard to make out even with the tech pointing things out to us.  The couple of pictures I have aren't that clear and I see several things that could be "nubs" in that general area, they happen to be pointing in all different directions... so I guess I'm just gonna have to wait a few more weeks.  =)

  • My tech actually typed out "angle of the dangle?" on my NT ultrasound and told me to Google it. According to that theory, which is the nub theory, I was having a girl...and last Friday my doctor confirmed that she is indeed a girl. Not that I set much stock in the theory, but I just wanted to point out that there are sonographers out there who are advertising it.
  • I mean, what the point? "It's a boy! BUT, it might be a girl so don't go building a Transformers inspired nursery, yet."

  • Some techs are much more experienced and can make and educated guess from the nub theory. My stepmom who has been a tech for over 15 years and another tech both used nub theory at separate times and both guessed a boy...they were right....at the same time, If you google the formation of baby genetalia; those pictures for male and female look very similar.

We had a blood test (for other reasons beside sex confirmation) that did confirm us having a boy. But ultimately if you're not having those tests done, then just wait for your 20 week anatomy scan. I certainly wouldn't post pics for complete strangers to make uneducated guesses...

  • There is definitely some scientific truth behind the nub theory...it's not an Old Wives Tale like cabbage boiling or baking soda & pee...

For those who are given an educated guess at an ultrasound by a tech or Dr, it may be fun to have others give a guess too...

I don't see why some people get so bent out of shape about people asking about the nub theory, it's just fun to guess. If you don't like it, don't participate & why complain? Just be supportive of other mommies!
