Rock and play for preemies?

We have rock and plays for our babies to sleep in. However now I'm starting to worry that because they are not a flat surface that it won't allow our preemie twins to breath right. We are bringing one baby home today and I need something for them to sleep in. What is everyone's experience with Rock n plays?

Re: Rock and play for preemies?

  • We don't have RNPs in Canada but my preemies (30 weekers, came home at 37weeks gestation) slept inclined for the first 3 months home.

DD has reflux so her ped suggested it. Plus they slept inclined in the NICU so they were used to it.

We didn't have respiratory issues though or anything of concern so in that case I'd definitely ask the ped/discharge doctor for their thoughts!

    Good luck! :)

  • My twins were 34weekers and slept in RNPs until they were 6-7 mo old. They were feeders/growers w no breathing support needed at all.

    Do what makes you comfortable.

  • My girl's were preemies (35 weeks) and spent 2 weeks in the NICU, primarily as feeders and growers. They did have oxygen and heart dips throughout their stay and also failed their car seat test at 36 weeks. I did not feel comfortable having them sleep on in an incline when we got home because of that . Also, they had been sleeping on a flat surface for 2 weeks so they were already used to it. I didn't want to switch things up when it was already working for them!
  • Mine were born at 36w4d 5 lbs 10 oz & 5 lbs 5 oz. No NICU and came home on day 5. DD did not pass the carseat test. We were instructed to not use anything that was in an upright or inclined position. So no RnP, swing or bouncers. She was retested at 30 days and we were given the ok to use whatever. The first month we just used a pack n play. We did use the RnP for naps after that.
  • Mine were 33weekers....we used rock n plays but they slept in a pack n play with a newborn station...the rock n play was for daytime, or fir nights my daughters reflux was really bad or for really bad fussiness so we could vibrate them. But they did not sleep in them on a regular basis as I wanted them to transition to their crib easily.

  • Mine were preemies and we used the Rock n' Plays from when they came home (7 days old) until they outgrew them.  We had no issues.

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!
  • I think it really depends on the baby. We had 35 weekers, they spent 3 weeks in the NICU but had no issues with breathing when they were at an incline but were notorious for spitting up.  They spent the first couple of weeks sleeping in the RNP, it helped with the reflux and spit up. We eventually moved them over to bassinets for nighttime and they use RNP for naps during the day

  • I am adamant that my babies sleep flat on their back. But it is all about what you are comfortable with, every parent is different. I use a PNP for W and M needs movement so he sleeps in a glider bassinet (Graco). That is the best invention ever!!!
