Trouble TTC

Clomid cycle & trigger shot, timed intercourse ONLY 1x

Hello,
I'm TTC for 10 months. I am in the middle of my first monitored clomid cycle (100 mg, cd 3-7) with timed intercourse. I took the trigger shot Thursday morning.

My husband and I had intercourse on Thursday night (approx 13 hours after injection). We were planning on having intercourse again last night at the 36 hour mark. Unfortunately my husband could not perform. This has never happened before. We tried for hours to get things going. We tried again this morning, but still nothing. I am COMPLETELY devastated. I can't help but feel so resentful for all the doctor visits, blood draws, sonograms and injections and he couldn't do the one thing he was supposed to do.

Has any one else had a similar experience?
Is there any chance we could have conceived with just having intercourse the one time at 12 hours post-shot?

Re: Clomid cycle & trigger shot, timed intercourse ONLY 1x

  • We've gone thru that.. But not because he couldn't perform, but because we were too tired and just didn't do it. I was so mad and felt like it was a total waste. We got a BFN that month, but honestly, as we moved on to the next month I was totally over it. Don't beat yourself up over it. There's still a chance you'll get a BFP. And if you don't, try again!

I've never experienced this with a treatment cycle, but I've had quite a few cycles over the last 2+ years where we've had less than ideal timing. No one else's experiences really has any bearing on yours right now, though.

I'm pretty sure you're supposed to ovulate within about 36 hours after the trigger, so you may have ovulated at some point yesterday. If you had sex Thursday, that gives you decent timing.

ETA: I also understand how frustrating it can be when you don't get the timing you want, especially when it's your partner's "fault" that you didn't. Keep in mind, though that since this is the "one thing he had to do," it probably put a lot of pressure on him which could be what the problem was. Go easy on him.

  • I am sorry your timing didn't go as planned. I don't have any personal experience, but I wanted to offer my support and good thoughts. Sometimes the pressure of TI can have these effects on our guys. I guess the silver lining is that you had one round of TI after the trigger, and sperm can live in your body for quite a while (up to a couple days depending on sperm quality and our bodily conditions).

    Cycle 3 (Jan 2015): 5mg Letrozole/Ovidrel/TI - BFN

    WTF consult scheduled for 1/29

  • I'm so sorry. No wonder you are feeling frustrated, with all you've had to go through to make this cycle a success.

I think it's important to remember that IF is the enemy here, and both of you are in it together...a performance issue is definitely just another aspect of the suffering that both you and YH are victims of, and not a failure on his part! I got so annoyed with DH for being whiny about providing an IUI sample this week...he was sooo needy and obnoxious and negative, and really stressed me out about the timing. But I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I had to orgasm on demand in the service of baby-making...it would be really upsetting on an emotional level and a lot of pressure on the physical level.

I'm glad you guys had one good timing there at 36 hours before O! Without a male factor, that gives you great chances. :) I also wonder if the first time it's all so new and stressful, but if you do need to do this again, it might feel like the pressure is down because it's just "old hat." Good luck!

I totally agree. It is so easy to get frustrated with each other. I used to get so upset when I felt like we had wasted an opportunity (whether because he or I couldn't get in the mood) but there is only so much pressure you can put on yourselves. You aren't sex machines! There is no guaranteed formula, so don't beat yourself up for not being "perfect." I really hope it works out for you. Good luck!

  • I've had similar issues, but my DH always came through even though it was frustrating and time consuming.

I had issues with my DH not wanting to do a 3rd IUI because "it was stressful to give a sample" you can imagine the words that came out of my mouth about how I get shit shoved up my vagina a million times a month, constant appointments I have to make time for, emotional and physical side effects of the drugs and getting my blood drawn a hundred times which I hate. So after that he didn't complain again, even though he got his way and we did TI my third cycle on clomid and of course BFN! It is really hard when only one partner is really going through treatments for something and all the guy has to do is OMG HAVE AN ORGASM! I'm getting annoyed at DH just thinking about it!

    Me: 33, DH: 32

    TTC: 2 years
    Fertility blood tests all normal
    Tilted uterus
    3 day ultrasound 17 follicles
    HSG: 11/13/13- tubes open
DH SA: SUPER sperm (145 million, 84% motility, 22% morphology)
All infection disease and immunity blood tests NORMAL

FIRST IUI May 2014: 100 mg Clomid days 5-9, third ultrasound CD 13 revealed four follicles 27, 24 and 20 and 13mm. Trigger shot May 28 with IUI May 29 and 30 (fingers crossed) - BFN started spotting 11DPO :(

IUI #2 B2B 6/23 and 6/24, three mature eggs and 130 million sperm! FX this is the month!  BFN 7/8

3rd cycle benched due to cysts - TI with OPK tests -  BFN

3rd mediated cycle: Clomid+Trigger+TI  (three follies left side, one on right as usual....what the hell right ovary get it together and produce some damn follicles!) 7DPO progesterone level 43 with NO suppositories YAY for a natural strong ovulation. Beta canceled started spotting 13DPO - Third time is not a CHARM! 14 day cycle WTF! Everything looks normal - RE wants to start injectables next cycle so this cycle I'm benched

Officially benched until March....but still plan on trying the baking soda douche due to my excessive and thick CM

  • Same thing has happened to us in the past. We have always done IUI so there's less pressure but it's still somewhat there. I try to be really strong for my hubs & tell him it isn't a big deal even though I'm super frustrated. Showing frustration will only make it worse. Maybe you can not tell him you're ovulating? I know that is tough though. It sounds like your timing is ok though! Don't fret...if you don't get it this time, you'll know what to troubleshoot next month
