Babies on the Brain

Question about my Period.

Hi!  I was on here about 3 years ago when trying to get pregnant with Baby #2. My DH and I are thinking maybe (?) to try for a 3rd. I was on Mirena for one year and hated it. My doctor took it out in July and I went on BC pills, my period was normal. I had a normal period in August and continued the pill pack. Then when it was time for sugar pills in September I did not get a period. (I should have started around 9-6-14)

Still no period, multiple neg HPTs and a neg blood test when I was one week late, so I'm not pregnant.

I read on the blog that if no period comes for 60 days to call the doctor again. My question is this: When does that 60 day count start? Do I start counting from when I was expecting my period in September? Or when I actually had a period in August?

Thanks for your help!
(I did use the search engine to see if this had been asked before, and I couldn't find anything that answered this specific question)

Re: Question about my Period.

  • I believe the 60 days refers to actual cycle length, so I would start counting from the first day of your last period.

Someone correct me if I am wrong please!

HOWEVER - you're on birth control.  The 60 day rule is for women having natural cycles.  Their bodies are stuck in the follicular phase, can't ovulate for whatever reason, and can't move on to having a period.  (You need to ovulate to have a period)

You are taking artificial hormones that artificially suppress ovulation and keep your lining from building up (part of the concern with having such a long natural cycle is too much lining build up).  I would call your doctor now just to say you didn't have a withdrawal bleed with your last pack, have negative pregnancy tests and so started your next pack.  She'll probably just say that some women occasionally skip their withdrawal bleeds and it's no big deal.  But, it doesn't hurt to ask.

I think she is off the pill now, but never got a withdrawl bleed from her last pack (if I am reading the post correctly).

OP Normall I would say count from the first day of your last period, but since part of that time you were on BCPs, I would count from when you stopped BCPs.

    PAIF/SAIF Welcome!

  • Sorry if the dates weren't clear. Twinkie0612, that is correct, I stopped taking BCP on 9-3 and I normally start a couple days after that, so I was expecting AF around 9-5 or 9-6.

I am not currently on BCP because I keep expecting AF to show up...but she's no where to be seen.

So I didn't know when I should start being concerned about not having a period.

Are you going to start another birth control pack when you get a period?

Did you not start a new pack because you didn't get a withdrawal bleed?

Do you not want to be on birth control anymore so you're just curious where you period is?

I'm sorry for so many questions - just trying to offer advice based on what your future mindset it.
Joy2611, I don't mind the questions :) I appreciate your asking so better help.

My DH and I are considering trying for Baby 3, so it is still undecided if I will go back on BCP (DH and I are ok not starting BCP).

You are correct, I did not start a new pack because I did not get withdrawal bleed. Some of that was in trying to find out if I was pregnant (which I'm not) and then it turned into wondering why I didn't get withdrawal bleed and playing the "wait and see" game if it would show up.

Your last question summed it all up pretty well. At this point, I really want to know where I am in my cycle. I would like to start temping again and I can't get a good perspective on my cycle if I don't know where to start, if that makes sense.

I will note that over the past couple weeks I have felt cramping like AF is going to start, but so far absolutely no signs of her. So I am pretty much just confused at my body right now :/

Thanks for trying to help me in this :)

  • Joy, Thanks for the help! You made me laugh when you said "That's such a sucky answer, but there it is." It's just so true of my situation, and I love the straight forwardness of it.

:D (btw, I have NO idea how my reply format got wonky, so apologies for that!) I am glad to at least know that this is at least in the realm of Normal. It is a weird feeling not knowing where I could be in my cycle. I figured I would go ahead and start temping anyway. Maybe I will see a point of ovulation and get an idea of when to expect AF.

The funny thing is that missing this last withdrawal bleed is what made me think I wanted another baby. I found myself really excited that I might be pregnant and I was actually a bit disappointed when I found I wasn't. That completely floored me ha!

Thanks for taking the time to help me figure some things out :) I have to say, I have enjoyed a return to TB.
