Trouble TTC

Serious cramping after IUI

hi- I am new here, but have been lurking for a bit. I would post more newbie introduction but am reeling with pain at the moment. Anyway, I had my 5th IUI about three hours ago and am now experiencing the worst cramps of my life. I did letrozole for five days and no trigger shot. I was not monitored this cycle because I have been out of town. There was a bit of trouble finding my cervix this morning and the nurse had to press my abdomen. Since I have never had cramping with IUI before I am wondering if anyone has experienced this? I left a message with the nurses office but have not heard back. Any tips or experiences would be very welcomed. Thank you!

Re: Serious cramping after IUI

  • I've only had one IUI but I had a lot of cramping after it. Not reeling in pain, but was crampy for days. I would wait and see what the nurse says. Good luck.

  • Thanks for the tips, it helps to know that someone else has had the cramps- it just seemed so unusual because I have had no problems with the past four. They are actually subsiding quite a bit now. The nurse got back to me and said to call if they are getting worse but to take tylenol.
@DaydreamSam‌ - Thanks! I am seeing an RE and have been monitored on the previous cycles. I have never had more than 2-3 follies so I suppose they just thought it would be ok this time. I was told the risk of multiples is very low on the letrozole- I hope that's accurate! I seem to be down to PMS type cramps now (thank goodness!) but will def call back if it gets any worse. I'm going to assume it was because of the catheter trouble for now. Thanks again!
  • For what it's worth, my RE told me it is highly unlikely to hyper-stim someone on oral meds. Not to say it doesn't happen, but very unlikely-particularly with femara.

  • My first IUI (that turned into an ICI because they couldn't get the catheter in) included 20 minutes of attacking the cervix, which precipitated very strong and painful menstrual-like cramps for most of the day (needed multiple doses of extra strength Tylenol). Touching the cervix at all but especially inside can cause uterine cramps. It's also possible that pressing on your abdomen helped the released follicular fluid irritate more areas in your abdomen - it can cause lots of shooting pain.

Hopefully this is the last IUI you need! But if not, even though Letrozole has a very small chance of too many follies, there's really no reason not to get an ultrasound to check. I would request that they continue to do so each cycle. Good luck!
