For newborn I loved my RaR newborn covers and my Blueberry Capri cover. I still use the Blueberry at 4+ months. Also my Thirsties duo size 1. It fits really well from very tiny and is still going strong.
Trifolding doesn't contain NB poo, so it will get on the cover and require a full change. A snappied/pinned prefold , you change the prefold and reuse the cover.
Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste,
It all revolves around you.
Thanks all. So trifold isn't really an option until baby is bigger?
Yes. Once your LO is pooping less (mine only poops 2-3 predictable times a day) OR not pooping explosive EFB runny poops then tri-folding is an option. Once you start solids you're less likely to get poop on the covers from a tri-folded prefolds or pad folded flat.
My LO is 4 months and we use pad folded flats for most changes because poops are less frequent.
my LO is only 2 weeks old (so I don't have a huge amount of experience with CDing) but we are using size 1 Osocozy unbleached prefolds with SweetPea NB covers with the Angel Wing fold. After a little bit of trouble shooting to prevent night time leaks (which, it turned out, was our own fault for not tightening the covers enough) we have loved this system. Cost was a factor for us which is why we went with the above option. DH and I both really like it. And yes, Snappis are a must IMO!
