Switching to formula :( question

After dealing with some GI issues, adjusting my diet for months, seeing a specialist...we are trying a switch to formula (nutramagen). I am sad. I will miss the breastfeeding bond we have. My question is what kind of water do you use for formula? The nutramagen says "do not warm." So I would want something I could at least keep at room temp. Distilled, purified, nursery?

Re: Switching to formula :( question

  • I use room temperature tap, but if you want something else I would use bottled water like pp said. Nursery water is nothing special.

  • We have a brita on our sink and that's what we use.

  • We bought a prima water cooler from Lowes for about $100, and get 5 gallon jugs for it. It has a room temperature button, that's what we use for bottles.
  • Tap water here as well. Haven't had any problems.
  • We use the fridge filter water I just do a few bottles at a time so the bottles each morning so it can sit to remove temp. Stopping breast feeding is difficult but I LOVE doing bottles and watching him stare at me. It's different then breastfeeding but honestly I don't feel like our bond has changed.
  • I am with you on the switch :(. I have been supplementing with neocate for the last month and have been struggling with ducal thrush. My supply is just tanking. I am still holding out that I can make it to 9 months before he's on neocate and solids full time. Time will tell.
With neocate, I boil water and cool covered in the fridge. I then poor into container, seal the lid, and leave at room temperature. This way I can mix the formula as I need it.
Good luck on the transition and congrats on making it this far EBF :)
  • My supply tanked when I went back to work and LO is about 90% FF now. I am still working through the emotions and I know how you feel. DS is doing great with formula though so that makes it easier. :)

We use bottled water. I wouldn't have any trouble using whatever water I felt safe to drink, it's just that our tap seriously sucks. We just bought a reverse osmosis system though and will be using that once we get it set up.

  • We just use warm tap water.
I had a hard time with the transition to formula with my first emotionally. But I found that after we made the switch he and I actually had a better bond. I'm sure that your bond won't be affected negatively either. Good Luck!

  • Thank you everyone! We are having to slowly switch because he was not taking the formula well. Right now he is getting 1/6th formula. I have breastfed a little at night and those moments have been extra precious since they are most likely our last breastfeeding. Thank you for the support!
