Working Moms

Intro

Hi ladies! I'm 29 y/o and 25 weeks pregnant due January. I live right outside of downtown Boston and work in downtown Boston. I plan on returning to work ASAP after the baby arrives since it's a job I started recently (beginning of September) and I do care about my career. I also own and run a startup on the side, so I am a very busy lady. Anyhow, as we get closer to baby arriving, I'll likely have some questions and will be lurking in the meantime. You may see me comment here and there. Thanks for having me!

To start, one thing that's been sitting on my mind - when should we start interviewing nannies with a projected start of around April? I created a care.com profile and I've had a bunch of inquiries, but I feel it's too early to interview and lock someone in right now. My SIL did that and last minute the nanny bailed completely on it all.

Re: Intro

  • Welcome! If you are close to a Boston you probably don't need to interview that far in advance. When we lived in NYC I had two dozen responses to my ad for a nanny (and that's within the Russian speaking community only). But when we moved out to the more rural area I only had a couple of responses (luckily I loved one of them). My guess is that the people who are looking now will prefer to have a job earlier than April so I would start looking 4-6 weeks before returning to work. The only additional concern is that some people don't like interviewing within their home for security reasons. In that case you may want to interview at the very end of your pregnancy since getting out with a newborn will be harder. Another consideration. I had the nanny start part time for a week before I had to go back full time. I pretty much used her as mother's helper - watching the baby while I get my haircut and manicure, get the house in order before I go back to work, make some freezer meals, get some last naps in :)

  • Fantastic advice so far. Thank you! Yes, I'm thinking I can be super woman but I know deep down I won't be able to...

I like the idea of having someone help part time towards the end of maternity leave too...

    Great ideas :)
