Bed Rest Questions

How many of you had to go on bed rest and why?  Also, how far along were you when you went on bed rest?  I am a theatre teacher trying to plan out my season for this year... I am thinking I should probably get everything done by the end of Feb or sooner!  I am due May 14th.

  • 34 weeks here and no bed rest so far!  I did have to stop working at 29 weeks because I developed carpal tunnel (which as a dental hygienist made my job unsafe for me and my patients).  I've gotten quite uncomfortable since then so not sure I'd still be able to work anyway.  Best of luck to you!
  • Thanks so much! It seems like bed rest or not, I should be prepared to stop working by week 30!  This is all very good to know.  Keep em coming ladies!  :-)

  • I'm not on bed rest but my doctor wrote me off work early. It was largely my choice to go off as early as I did (28 weeks), but if I needed to keep working for financial reasons I could have insisted and don't think I'd be having any serious medical problems if I were working now (31.5w). I'd be exhausted and swollen and sore and not very efficient, but my BP and everything has been great. While I'm not on bed rest I do make sure to spend half of my day laying down and take it easy on the chores.

@chrissynena tell me more about it.  Were you in a lot of pain and then when you stopped working you just felt better overall?  I am incredibly curious.

  • No bed rest and I delivered a day shy of 38 weeks. I worked up until my c-section. Fortunately, I had no issues because I was not prepared at work or at home for maternity leave until the very end. I do not recommend doing it this way.

I was on my feet all day. About 2 hours into the day I was just really sore. My belly and my back. Retail manager = working a lot of freight. When I had to run from one side of the store to the other I would get very winded.

After an 8-10 hour day, I would get home and my legs wouldn't settle down to go to bed. Even if I got out by 5. I was VERY restless which meant not a lot of sleep. I also have pregnancy carpal tunnel, which I got last time, but it is 100x's worse this time. My hands would wake me up because they were not only asleep but burning and aching all night long (from working frieght).

As I reread what I type, I feel like it makes me sound like a baby. But man what a difference it has made to be off for just a week so far. No more restless nights (with my legs, I still toss and turn because of my belly) and my hands just fall asleep now instead of burning. I just knew I was ready to be done.

  • @chrissynena you do not sound like a baby at all!  These are things I need to know because way before I got pregnant I already suffered  from things like low back pain, headaches, fatigue, trouble sleeping, etc.  I think a lot of it was from my endo.. anyway.  This is all very good to know.  Thank you!  I hope you are feeling okay now!

  • @greks84   Also, this was our last shot at getting pregnant and I wasn't doing anything to that would make me loose the babies. Typically I work 12 hour days, but went down to 8-10 by 9 weeks. My RE was like no way, no 12 hour days.

Thanks, feeling good now. Actually feeling guilty for relaxing so much, not something I am used to. Hope you have a healthy pregnancy!! :)

I worked as a waitress so on my feet and constantly moving. I'm 31w3d today and I was admitted to the hospital yesterday because of Baby A having a leak in his amniotic sac.

I'll be here till I deliver at 35 wks or sooner. I don't have anything ready at home so it's stressing me out and I have a DS who I am devastated to be away from. Also I had no problems up until this point.

  • Thanks @Mrs.McIrish and @greks84‌

I was def blindsided by this as my pregnancy has been problem free. I'm very active and in good health but that isn't revevant in this case.

The worst part is being away from my 3yr old DS. We spend all our time together so this is super hard on mommy.

  • @BabyKsMommy‌ T&P for you! Hoping you get some quality time in with your DS in the coming weeks. Remember this is only for a (relatively) short time!
  • I was put on bed rest at 26 weeks due to a shortening cervix, had my twins at 35w4d.  My bed rest wasn't super strict, my OB referred to it as "house arrest."  I worked from home and spent all of my time sitting and laying down.  Prior to the appointment that I was put on bed rest I had zero issues, went in for a routine appointment and they saw my cervix had shortened a lot more than it should have and basically told me that was it.

Things can change on a dime so be prepared for anything.  Best of luck!

  • 28 weeks for shortening cervix, went into labor at 37 weeks
  • The hardest thing about a twin pregnancy is you can't plan. I went on bedrest on Friday because I was having contractions at 16w. They just want to make sure babies get to viability and then I will be able to resume activities under a very watchful eye.

Bed rest in hospital at 23 weeks due to short cervix. Delivered at 31 weeks.
    DS#1 born 9/23/06
Twins DS#2 and 3 born at 31 weeks, 3 days due to a short cervix on 8/2/13.
  • I was not on bedrest at all and delivered at 37w3d via c-section. However, I was a high school theater teacher when pregnant with DS1 and closed our production of Annie at about 33 weeks, then left my job and had to move everything I owned out of my classroom at 35 weeks. That was HARD, yo, and I spent the final four weeks of that pregnancy hobbling around with a cane because of a bad lumbar strain that was almost certainly a direct result of that activity. Be smart, get help wherever you can, don't work yourself into the ground, and ask your doctor when he/she would restrict you from any major travel and use that as your potential "no production work past this point" mark.
