2 to 1 nap transition

Anyone else going through the hell of a nap transition? The 3 to 2 was so easy this is just driving me nuts! Besides a few weeks of nap fighting around 11 months we where really lucky and had a pretty steady 9 am hour and 1pm hour and a half I could count on. For the past 3 weeks we had no morning naps at all and an hour afternoon nap followed by 2 very cranky girls. I decided to go for it and try one nap, so far the timing has not been working but I hope we settle
Into a good routine again soon. Any tips on how to make this easier? Also how do you manage to shower on a one nap schedule? I really can't have them hanging out in the bathroom with me they are so clumsy and very pushy with eachother lately.

Re: 2 to 1 nap transition

  • O heavens the 2 to 1 transition was so not fun! And it seemed to drag on forever....some days the boys needed 2 naps, some days they just needed 1....made it so hard to plan things!

For us it was also tricky bc they dropped their afternoon nap first, which apparently isn't the norm. What I ended up doing was, instead of a 9 am and 2 pm nap, I set naptime to 10 am and then moved it up half an hour every three weeks. I would plan to do at-home activities in the morning, a snack before nap and then have lunch and an outing in the afternoon to break up the day.....ultimately it will flip and we'll do outings and lunch before nap (it will be 1 or 1:30 when they turn 2 in a couple months).

As for showering, I have become a fan of night showers bc, even though the one nap is on the longer side, the time does seem to fly by and there's always so much more to do.

  • My oldest was down to one nap by 9mo bc he's awful at sleeping.

Could you push the morning nap a bit? Mine are 15mo and still at 2 naps - 10:30-12:00 and 3:30-5:00. They go to bed at 8:00-8:30.

When my big one napped, it was usually 1-3p.

I'll put them in their cribs if I need to take a quick shower and didn't get one in while they slept.

  • Like pp we dropped the pm nap around 13 mos and had a 10am nap that we have gradually pushed back. We started off having to put them to bed a little earlier, like 630, until the nap was a little later. My girl twin was more ready for one nap than the boy so it was a struggle for a few weeks at least to make it work off the boy. Once they got the hang of it I wax so glad we made the switch.

  • I did try to push the morning nap at first and it did not go well, no afternoon nap and they where soooo cranky! Yesturday they went down at 1130 and one slept until 1:40, the other till 2:30! Hoping it works again today. Mine already go to bed at 630/7 so I really can't see putting them down much earlier at night.
