Swaddling - How to ween?

My daughter is now 4 months old and I have been swaddling her since she was 6 weeks. I think she is getting to the point where she doesn't need to be wrapped up anymore. She hates for her arms to be wrapped now. If I try to put her to bed without being swaddled she immediately wakes up. If I wrap her up and take her arms out, so just her tummy and legs are wrapped she sleeps. How should I go about weening her off of being swaddled all together? Oh, and they have never swaddled her at daycare, where she has been for 2 months. I know she sleeps some for them, but not that great. Thanks for all your help.?

  • If her arms aren't wrapped, then you're half way there!  Can you try wrapping her more loosely?  Maybe you can gradually wean her.

  • you might try the swaddle me blankets and there's a Halo sleep sack that doubles as a swadder.  Perhaps you can swaddle her in that and gradually undo the swaddle part and just leave her in the sack.
  • she may not be ready..  We swaddled until 6 months..  When he was ready to stop he would break out of it himself...    We used the swaddle-me blankets
  • Try the sleep sack.  But honestly, I dont' think there's anything wrong with continuing with her half swaddle (especially since you can't really give her a blanket at this age and it's the winter time).  She'll eventually not want to be wrapped on her own as she gets older.

  • We were doing the full-swaddle (including arms) until 5 months. We left one arm out, then the other, then dropped it altogether. Sounds like you are on the right track...there's no need to rush her.

  • We stopped swaddling when he started breaking his arms out. ?We moved to a sleep sack first so his legs were still confined and it was surprisingly easy.

Ditto. We did the same thing. I love the Halo sleep sacks.

  • There are some who have success with looser and looser swaddling. We ripped the bandaid off; we just stopped (after thinking it over  for a few weeks).

He adjusted after a little time.

Not as bad as we imagined, really.

  • Thanks for all your help. I think I will give her a little longer and then try the sleep sack. Thanks again
