Cloth Diapering

I've Finally Joined You! (Plus a Question)

Hi All,

DH and I welcomed a happy, healthy daughter on 9/21, brought her home the next day, and have been cloth diapering ever since the meconium changed to BF poop a day later! We have a stash of size one Osocozy unbleached prefolds and SweetPea NB covers that we are using right now...DH and I both love it!

We mostly use the Angel Wing fold and that has been 100% effective during the day.  Our one problem is that DD is apparently a heavy wetter and during the 2 1/2-- 3 hour stretches that she sleeps overnight now, she will wet through her diapers to the point where we are changing her and the cradle sheet at least twice per night.  Any thoughts? I was looking into different folds with no luck yet, and doubling up on prefolds seems like wayyy too much fabric. Should we be looking at hemp inserts or wool covers?

Anyway, we are loving CDing so far.  DH & I attribute a lot of our early success on the advice and tips from this board so Thank You!!

Is the prefold totally soaked, or could there be some gaps in the fit of the cover?

The prefold is entirely soaked. Even during the day they are entirely soaked but we can pick up on her early cues that she needs to be changed which is why I think we have avoided day time leaks. She still has the scrawny NB legs so it is possible there is a gap even though the covers look like they fit well.  We always make sure that there are no visible gaps (though in the middle of the night I am sure it is possible we aren't as vigilante!).

  • Welcome and congrats! What size prefolds are you using? Do you have any the next size up? I would probably start by sizing up but my DS only just now started having nighttime leaks at 11 months so take my advice with a grain of salt.
Thank you! We are using the size 1 osocozy prefolds (nb size).  We already have a prepped stash of size 2's but I am hesitant to break them out because the size 1's already look massive on DD.

  • I agree with rugby; try some workhorses for overnight.

  • Yup, GMD workhorses. I didn't have to add a doubler to those until we moved up a size and I started getting a 6hr stretch of sleep out of DS.

    I used a thirsties sz 1 cover.

Congrats! Try some GMD workhorse fitteds for longer stretches. But not with a sweet pea cover. Try a slightly larger cut one like Rumparooz or Thirsties. We had good luck with those not leaking and holding a lot. And if she continues to be a heavy wetter, when she stops pooping overnight, get yourself some S'bish. They're awesome.
All of this.  Welcome and congrats.

  • As long as you can get two fingers bn the kid and the elastic, you should be ok.

  • Just wanted to chime in and say....before you buy your workhorses, you may want to try looking for them on the weekly "trade" thread in this forum.
Could save you some money, and they'd already been broken in and at their best absorbancy, so they'd save you time & energy as well.
