September 2012 Moms

What should I do with my evenings?

DH is working nights for the next 3 months, so every night after the girls are in bed is mine and mine alone.  Give me all your ideas of what to do (but spare me the cleaning/organizing my life.)  What bad tv/movies should I watch, what fluff books should I read, what do at home exercise should I try, what beverage should I not feel guilty drinking alone... anything you've got, put it here!

Re: What should I do with my evenings?

  • Hot chocolate with pumpkin marshmallows from Aldi. MMMM.

Watch Shark Tank, Master Chef Jr, and maybe Sherlock and Luther if you are okay with a little bit creepy/scary/dark.

  • I'm a Netflix junkie and have watched private practice, switched at birth, desperate housewives, orange is the new black, hemlock grove, and the secret circle (to name only a few that I love). That's what i do after DD is in bed when I'm not stuck studying!

  • I second sherlock and Luther. I'm also really into desperate housewives right now. I'm watching parenthood with dh as well.

  • CHICAGO FIRE! Best guilty pleasure show, they're all so sexy. Read anything by Nora Roberts, mindless fluff. So great. And don't forget to do ice cream pairings with your wine.

  • There are so many options...  I guess it depends more on what your preferences are:

Mine are to watch and or read mindless crap.  I don't want to think anymore :)  Nora Roberts the bride quartet is a good one, as is the sookie stackhouse series if you are true blood fan (well except for the last few books..) as is anything by Jane Green and Emily Griffin.

I also don't know if you consider this organizing or not but I am way behind on making my photo books.  Before I had DS scrap-booking was a hobby of mine which turned into making photo books.  So when ever DH is away I try to use the time to start putting together a book.  My problem is I am such a perfectionist (i do not use the template offered by the sites i prefer to make my own) and take way to long, hence why i am still working on his first one!  So that could be something to do, if you find that to be fun and not work / organizing.
    my read shelf:
Sara (smb+jab)'s book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)

  • If you don't mind the young adult genre, Divergent is an easy read.  I just finished Gone Girl as well.  Though, I tend to read more when DH is home and wants to watch baseball or football on TV.

    Wine.

I second Chicago Fire.  And so far, How to get away with murder (ABC, Thursday nights) looks like it will be good.  And it's after Scandal which is good.  DH is gone every Thursday night, so this is usually what I'm doing.  :)

    Littlest Man Sept 2012

  • If you haven't seen then, watch OINTB, Good Wife, Prison Break, 24 (going a bit old school here since it's been years since this was on TV, but seriously, it's awesome).

If I had more evening time, I would be crocheting afghans. Don't know if you crochet or knit, but if not, there's probably another craft you'd enjoy.

Make holiday gifts like homemade vanilla and infused vodkas.

Read Nora Roberts, Nicholas Sparks, Lisa Scottoline, Jodi Piccoult or Anita Shreve (the last two are not fluff, but I love their work).

Do yoga, it's a nice, relaxing end to the day.

I got hooked on 'Land Girls' and then 'Bomb Girls' on Netflix. I'm still sad I can't find a similar show to watch at night now.
@harti09 Have you seen Foyle's War on netflix?  It's a BBC murder mystery series that takes place during WWII, so same setting as Land Girls, and really really well written.

    All these are great!

There's a bunch of good costume drama miniseries on Netflix, too, like The Forsyte Saga (with Damien Lewis), Daniel Deronda, Bleak House...and of course The Tudors if you like a little smut with your corsets.

  • Lucky duck getting so much me time!  You've already gotten great suggestions with the shows, crafting, and working out.   Maybe do 30-45 minutes of each per night?

  • I try to do use some hand weights and balance ball and do some reps during commercials. You could even do lunges and squats in place as well.

I always start off a show doing it strong, and halfway through the show/commercials I've given up. haha

  • I do 30 day challenge type workouts and do best with sticking to it when DH is traveling. I usually have something crafty - birthday party stuff, holiday stuff, learning games for the kids, decor. I also do my best Pinterest browsing when DH is gone. I watch things that DH has no interest in and I don't have on my must watch as it airs list like Revenge, Nashville, Project Runway. Or total teen shows like Awkward.

  • DH was just working nights for 6 weeks.

Netflix: Scandal, Revenge, Call the Midwives, Parks and Rec, Pretty Little Liars, Bones, Parenthood, Brothers and Sisters, So many shows.

    You could make craft things.
  • Extra long (use all the hot water) shower with a glass of wine. Followed by your favorite movie and more wine in your pj's. If you haven't watched The Good Wife now is the time to do so. I'm more of a horror movie/book person so just about anything I recommend is usually dark. Enjoy your free time while you can.

  • Sleeeeeppp...seriously, now that DS goes down by 8:30, I go to bed at like 9 pm...yea DH and I cuddle, talk, etc for a little while in bed, but honestly I am so tired all the time I'm probably asleep by 10 most nights.
I think you got some good suggestions.
