Ugh, sleep struggles

For those of you with LOs in toddler beds or convertible cribs, how are you putting them to sleep? Do they stay in their beds?

DD does not stay put, and usually lets me rock her to sleep. We had started putting her down awake, and it was goin great...until she learned how to climb out a week later.

We baby gate in her door way and leave the door cracked. She's having a horrible time with naps, because I can't stay in her room (too much of a distraction) but I also feel like if I don't stay in til she's asleep, she just plays around forever and doesn't sleep.

Any tips?
Our little Samosa arrives in January!

Re: Ugh, sleep struggles

  • For night time, I usually sing/rock him for a minute or two (just to drowsy) and put him down. The room is completely dark and I shut the door. He runs around his room, sometimes just for a minute and sometimes up to 1/2 hour, but always ends up back in his bed and puts himself to sleep.

Naps haven't been quite so easy - I've always rocked him to sleep for naps so I still do and I get him down just fine, but when he wakes up (same scenario with door closed) he won't put himself back to sleep. His naps have gone down from 2 hours to 45 mins-1 hour. He seems ok so I'm trying to just deal with it and put him to bed on time or early, but I miss my mid-day get things done session on weekends! FWIW, he sleeps on a mat at daycare during the week and naps anywhere from 1-2 hours depending on the day.

  • I'm dreading the crib conversion to be honest. J hasn't tried once to climb out of his crib (knock on wood) and I'm honestly hoping he doesn't try it anytime soon. But we are prepared. His crib converts to a toddler bed and we have a toddler rail we will install so he doesn't just roll out of bed. We have sheets all ready to go for when the big change happens. I know how stubborn my son is and I just KNOW he is going to challenge this adjustment. Not looking forward to it. Plan for the worst/hope for the best!!

  • We STILL co-sleep (I know, I know), so our situation is a little different, but DD has only once gotten out of bed in the middle of the night.  I'm thinking we'll transition her to her own bed around her birthday and start working toward getting her in her own room over time after that.

  • DS#2 is still in the crib, but with DS#1 we had the issue of him not staying in his toddler bed. 90% of the time he ended up asleep on the floor rather than in his bed. We just left him there until we went to bed. When we went to bed we'd put him back to bed and then he'd stay there for the rest of the night. Eventually he stopped falling asleep on the floor. Sometimes it would take an hour or so for him to fall asleep, but he figured it out. We also made sure that there were only so many toys/books available to him and they were quiet toys. I wouldn't stress to much about it.
