Crib & Mattress(es) Question

We have our crib together at the highest settings & the mattress is in it. I'm still to short to reach over the rails (sides or front) to be able to lift baby in and out.

Is it safe to use two mattresses in the beginning or am I better off looking into a step stool?

Re: Crib & Mattress(es) Question

  • I think a stool would be a safer option.

  • I don't think two mattresses would be a problem. The only issue I can think of would be that it may be harder to elevate the head of the mattress. I would be paranoid about losing my balance on a step stool, but I'm also really clumsy.

  • my concern with two mattresses is that when baby starts to figure out how to move around it will be easier for them to get to the top of the rail. you always want to do your baby proofing ahead of baby, meaning you anticipate that their next milestone is coming up and proof before they start getting in to something (outlets, lowering the mattress, etc). you aren't going to be growing any taller, and getting the baby out of the crib isn't going to get any easier as they get bigger (until they can stand-that's the only way i can get DS out of his crib now between me being short and my belly preventing me from standing closer to the bed), so i would invest in a good step stool. two mattresses might be ok until baby learns to roll, but you can't have two mattresses for long so you're still going to have the same problem in a few months or so. i remember watching an episode of true life (or something) where the couple shopped for the shortest to the ground crib that they could find because the mom to be was so short. i'm 5"1 so i was mostly ok with the mattress on its highest setting (though DS didn't sleep in the crib until 8 months), but as it has been lowered it has gotten harder. hell, i probably still couldn't pick him up out of the crib if i wasn't pregnant. he has to at least get on his knees for me to attempt to pick him up, otherwise i just stand there and talk to him until he is ready to go from laying down to standing.

  • I have to ask.   How tall are you ?     ha ha....I think everyone else pretty much covered it,  but I would go with the step stool just for the $$ factor.    Step stools are cheaper than a 2nd mattress.

  • Get a bunch of matresses and decorate the nursery with a Princess and the Pea theme!!

;) go for the stool. Is it too late to exchange for a low profile crib? I got the kendall low profile from pottery barn.
  • I feel like the distance from the top of the mattress to the top of the crib is a specific distance for a reason. So I'd say step stool. :)

@mander82‌ not too short haha, about 5'4. The problem is the crib rails are curved instead of being flat.

I think the reason the mattress is "low" is because the side rails are a bit angled, making them the lowest rails.

  • Oh dear....I am 5' 4"  too....I hope I can reach the baby!   Now I am worried!    We don't have the mattress yet!     Maybe you just can't reach cause your bump is in the way ?

  • For mamas who haven't bought cribs yet the babyletto Moda is a good option in addition to the low profile kendall I mentioned above (which is pretty regularly) on sale.
