Eww...no

https://www.eater.com/2014/9/29/6865481/chipotle-caught-in-the-middle-of-a-diaper-changing-debacle

I understand the frustration with having no changing table, but that's the fault of the restaurant, not the other patrons.

  • I'll change a diaper anywhere. But a restaurant is not the place.

  • As far as I know, there are no laws, ordinances, or legal rules that a place of business has to supply a baby changing station in a restroom, at least not where I live. YMMV, depending on your local or state government. However, there are laws against public urination and defecation, so while I'm not sure that changing a diaper on a restaurant table falls under those guidelines either, it can't be good for health codes.

Now, it makes good corporate sense and does help out parents who need to change a baby while patronizing your establishment to provide changing facilities, but that mom was just rude. I have a list of gas stations on the drive to my parents that have changing tables in their bathrooms, and those are the places we stop when on the road. They get my business instead of the ones who don't.

  • I totally confess to changing a dirty diaper in a booth at a restaurant! It was a supposedly "family friendly" chain that didn't have a changing table in the restroom. I did it discretely and no one saw anything (we were in the back of the restaurant.) I always put the clean diaper under the baby's butt while I am changing the old diaper so there was no chance of anything getting on the seat.

I am not sorry about it and will probably do it again if faced with the same circumstances. That being said, I would never change a diaper on a table in clear view of other patrons. Hopefully, this incident will spur the restaurant management to get a changing table installed. If you have a kid's meal on your menu, you should probably expect families to eat at your restaurant. It logically follows that some of those families will have small children that are in diapers. Diapers will need to be changed.

I don't have a problem with this, per se, changing a baby on a booth seat. Discreet and where random butts sit anyway? yes. It's the changing on a table that's meant for food to be consumed that's the problem for me as well.

I agree. It sounds like she was pissed that they didn't have a changing table and was trying to cause a scene.

Yup. And people like that just get on my nerves. If you have a problem with no changing table, talk to the manager about it. Write a letter to corporate. Flame them on Yelp. Don't change your kid's diaper on a friggin' TABLE!

  • I admit that I get irrationally angry when restaurants don't have a changing table, but I still will not change a diaper on a table.  It's rude and the other patrons don't deserve to see or smell your kids shit.  My advice is to either go to your car or make sure you pack a washable pad in your diaper bag so you can do it on the floor in the bathroom.  Then speak to or call the manager to complain.

  • I work at a place that does have a changing table, and more than once have had people leave dirty diapers at the table when they leave. Just a shitty diaper plopped down on the plate. Ewww...

Now that is just ridiculous. And lazy. And disgusting.
  • You know this is the same person who would be suing if she found out the server didn't wash their hands. She's not proving a point or sticking it to the man, she's just being entitled and obnoxious. I'm sure not having a changing table sucks but there are so many alternatives to throwing this kind of a hissy fit. The reasonable thing would be to take a note of it and call the manager later or just never go back to that establishment.

Oh god, I'm sorry... that's a health hazard you shouldn't have to deal with. *gag*

  • It is also a really common occurrence for a kid to puke all over the table and the parents not say a word. Just quickly pay and leave. I get the lovely discovery when I go to pick up the pile of napkins bare handed. And this ladies is what I get paid $4/hr to do!
  • We once had a customer in a booth change their kids diaper (we don't have high chairs, let alone a change table). She was super discreet about it, and afterwards took the diaper to dispose of in the bathroom.

My only response to my teenage staff freaking out about the ordeal was to make sure the area was wiped down properly after they leave. None of the other diners noticed what happened, and I can't expect the lady to do it on the bathroom floor, as I wouldn't want to with my own child.

All that being said, I personally would go elsewhere to change said diaper.
  • Well, I'm never going out to eat ever again. Thanks ladies.

  • I just ate at chipotle. That is so gross. That poor staff. I one time had to ask a lady to stop drinking wine when I worked at Starbucks, but this is much worse.

    Wait, what?

You're the bad guy in your scenario. Wine>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>coffee.

  • @chelseavranich‌ Pretty much she had a bottle of wine (around 1 pm) and met someone there. The other person ordered a drink and she brought her own cup and was casually drinking the wine. She left the bottle on the floor next to her and corked it every time she refilled. I asked her to not drink wine in the store (went through liquor license, yada yada). She lied and said she wasn't drinking it and I watched her quickly finish her glass. You would think she would at least bring a flask of something to spike her coffee with. But a bottle of wine? You know it's bad when a 19 year old has to tell you to stop drinking.

  • That's true! But she must have planned it. I never saw her uncork it, she came with the bottle uncorked!
